The rotary is dead, long live the rotary
Just read this article, makes me very sad. Bought one of the first RX3's in Houston and have been in love with rotaries ever since.

Very much a repost. Even by Fox.
Try this one, which has several threads on it already:

Ending June 2012, but Mazda made an official statement that work on the rotary will continue.
Don't believe everything you read about the rotary unless it's an official Mazda statement. The rest is just rumor mongering.

I'm looking at a R3 and the dealer told me there would be a rotary/electric hybrid in 2014, and mentioned the 300 hp range too. At the MotoGP event at Laguna Seca the Mazda reps there said they were working on an elongated rotary that would produce more torque because of this elongated design.
The high torque electric hybrid might be a compelling turbo alternative, certainly from a fuel efficiency standpoint. Though I like the hydrogen idea as well.

Dealers are salesmen.
"Salesman" is one of the professions (along with "weatherman" and "lawyer") that make a living on the principle of lying.
Don't believe what a showroom dealer will tell you about the future car. Only believe 10% of what they can tell you about the one sitting in front of you.

Actually the journalist is correct; when he says "flashy green technologies" he means electrics and hybrids available today, as the entire quote suggests.

Mazda rep tweeted this, ''Mazda is aiming to achieve a breakthrough with the ‘Skyactiv’ technology, and we are zealously working on new models to house the next-generation rotary engine.''
Not only does it sound like the rotary is coming back in the near future, but for the first time in over 20 years, there may be more than one model that houses the platform.

They stopped selling the cosmo in 1995, so 17 years would be more accurate. But still, very good news!
