it should be available wherever Road and Track is sold...

Two Pennies

Got my copy at Barnes & Noble on the 26th, try a B. Dalton also, (subsidiary of Barnes & Noble)

My concern was also the same as to increased cost ratio to increased HP. I think it might be nice instead to try increasing the size of the rotors first, then consider FI. If $7K only = 25 HP, then 238 + 25 = 263 HP for what is essentially, a 1/4 cost of a new RX-8. Now, granted, previous talk of an electronic-assisted SC was interesting and I would like to see a version, be it MS or a later iteration of the '8 with FI, hit 300HP, but I think testing should start with displacement volumes... perhaps 1.3L bumped up to 1.6,7 or 8L?

Obviously, engineering a 3-rotor version of the Renesis is a challenge for Mazda developers to deal with rather than executing a lengthy discussion here, but perhaps a trial of systematic progression up the NA to FI ladder, i.e. 1st: larger rotors for displacement, 2nd: Sequential/Parallel TC, 3rd: SC'ing as we've seen here. Then begin a combination of systems, Larger rotors + Sequential TC, then Larger rotors + Parallel TC, then Larger rotors + SC, and so on.

why do people keep thinking it's gonna cost over 7k for mazda to build a Mazdaspeed version of the RX-8.... they're not going to do that, they know better, and their record of official Mazdaspeed vehicles have shown it (Mazdaspeed Protege, Mazdaspeed MX-5 Miata, and the upcoming Mazdaspeed 6, they are all only about 3-4k more than its base car counterpart)

Even so, zoom, 3-4K for less than a 40 Hp gain? perhaps, but I think instead greater displacement FIRST, then FI SECOND. Although I will admit that my numbers were exaggerated. Figure $4K = 1/7 cost of new RX-8. Therefore, 238 Hp x 1/7 = 34Hp, which is about what the numbers in the article show (238 + 34 = 272, 275 quoted)

Nothing but love for zoom... and his avatar... :D :D

There was talk about a RX-8 Coupe and making the MS RX-8 a coupe would give it a (hopefully) lower weight.

Combine that lower weight with a firmer suspension and more hp from a NA rotary would be nice. I myself would prefer a NA engine over FI but if they cant get the NA rotary to around 275 hp, then I would prefer FI.

So, basically you want an RX-7.

hehe...i guess your right. But I would assume most people would want one too.
I guess my ideal rx-8 is not a rx-8 but a rx-7.

Long live the RX-7

Nemesis8 10-28-2004 05:15 PM

Secret Agent M12 :D

The long awaited return of the RX7 will be the one for you and me when it comes out. Wider rotors in a NA design will give us the power we dream about in a new frame designed around the RX8 ideas. I'll toast you when we both are driving one on the same highway...

Till then, I am going to modify the crap out of my RX8 :p

You do realize that it is far more than strapping a Fi on it right. Even if it was $4K-$7K it would be worth it. You are talking about an MS bodykit, MS suspension, AND the FI. If you added up the MS stuff right now (not including the magnesium rims) on Rosenthal you are looking at $7K+.

m477 10-28-2004 08:45 PM

IMHO, Mazda should do whatever it takes to make the MS8 competitve with the STi, in both price and performance.

I'm sorry to say, that $7K will definitely shock some on this forum, but others will say bring it on. I'm on the road to nowhere, so I will spend my money on what makes me happy. And that is my rotary powered vehicle - I'm sure you feel the same - life is to short to think about tomorrow.

M12 10-29-2004 01:56 AM

If you add up the cost of all the stuff you get your 7k.

But the Mazdaspeed miata isnt that much more than the regular miata.
So what if that kind of pricing is applied to the RX-8.

Something to think about. :p

................................i guess i'll have to stop all my projects, and start saving some money. gotta start taking bus to save some mileage in case i am trading in mine.

Some thoughts on a Mazdaspeed version of the RX-8

It ought to offer substantially more performance, at a relative bargain price.

It ought to retain that "GT" feel with more horsepower AND torque.

Models ought to be the Subaru WRX Sti and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo.

Thanks.

If anyone was interested i did the math for english units and it comes out to:
362 horsepower
258 ft-lbs of torque

Went to BAM this evening trying to kill time while my better half was shopping and there it was.....a unicorn named Mazda. If not for all the employees in the break room, I have taken it into the back for some quality time. It does state in the mag that although not given full endorsement from corporate it is in a fact an engineering project....thank you Speed, you have restored my faith that Mazda is still a performance car manufacturer and is just as unhappy with current performance.

Just wondering...do the people in Japan complain so much about not having enough power like the people in America?

An8inLAS 10-30-2004 06:58 PM

Where is Tim the "Toolman" from? 'Nuff said.

I'm not for sure, but I do not think they have the same regulations about the life of the CAT over there. Maybe their CAT's are running @ 1,000 degrees and the mix is still lean. What would be interesting, is to find out what flash they are on in Japan, anyone know?

mysql101 10-30-2004 07:44 PM

My canscan shows cat temp at over 1600 degrees.

This is really a question for someone like Japan8, but from what I've heard they are much more concerned about driver and car skill combined events, like how well a car can do at autocross.

Jason, was that F or C your canscan recorded?

If it is F that equates to 871C. I meant to say, get the temp up to 1000 C

Japan8 10-31-2004 01:30 AM

Driven 'em both. Feels about the same to me. Also according to the figures that Japanese tuners are getting stock... the JDM tune is putting out about the same power as the USDM tune.

As far as what the enthusiasts say... they don't seem to be complaining as much as Americans are. Some felt the car was pretty good, but after test driving a FI model, they said for the right price... that would be even better. Others... they would like more on the low-end (too), but again... for the right price. The majority opinion is that about 50-60hp for about $4k...

Exactly. Just like with motorcycles here, people like to hit the mountains with the crazy hairpin turns and all. All that power of a Viper is going to do jack and shit in that situation. The lighter, quicker handling car that is not too difficult to keep under control will be the winner...

Sure on the highways (except ones like the Shuto (capital) expressway) there is some decent room to let the car stretch its legs, but damn... the toll is not funny! About $80 one-way on the Tohoku Expressway from Tokyo to Fukushima City, Fukushima Prefecture... a distance of roughly 400km. So you aren't going to be doing that too often for just fun...
