this is in addition to your recall. you will receive recall notice later.

Okay, I went to my dealer here in Chicago - Jacobs Twin! One of the service guys told me that the following recall only applies to AT only????

Is this true?

NO...it's for all RX-8's up to the spring build of '06. Just have them check your VIN against the recall, that will tell all!

got the recall done tuesday, with 46496 miles on the car. I told them I had experienced no problems, and had replaced the spark plugs myself in april (5 months ago), so I shouldn't need new plugs or engine. when I called on monday to make the appointment, I asked about getting a fuel tank fill-up, he didn't know about it. when I brought it in on tuesday, he said he read the letter after speaking with me on the phone, and they would wash it and fill it up.

I didn't bother getting a loaner car.

they called me back 4 hours later. when I picked it up, they had washed it, filled it up with gas, and put about 3 miles on it.

when they printed out the paperwork, it said they had replaced 2 spark plugs. so I asked for my old ones back, thinking I would just put them back in when the new ones were due to be replaced.

the service guy came back out and handed me 2 new spark plugs, still in the box.

he said 'the computer told us to replace them, and we have to send the old ones back to mazda'. not sure if he meant the computer in my car, or their computer, or the recall instructions, or what. but with 2 new ones in hand, I felt it best to let the conversation end there.

drove home, seemed to run fine. heavy traffic, so I didn't get to redline it. on the highway, I was able to floor it once in 6th gear, it felt more responsive.

the next day (today, wednesday), I was able to try it out. from a standing start, full throttle, getting to redline in 1st and 2nd seemed about the same as before. but I noticed that any time I was cruising in a steady gear and then floored it, it seemed more powerful. I think it gained some torque in the mid range from 3000-6000 rpms. I had been redlining it and driving hard in general the whole time between first reading about this recall and up until the time I got the recall performed to make sure I had enough oil on the seals.

anyone else feel stronger after the reflash?

BTW, we in Australia have heard nothing regarding this recall. Still hoping we've dodged that bullet.

Renesis*696 re: your cat problem, I'd say your car has experienced a flooded engine at some stage in the past. Flooding often results in fuel collecting in the cat. Technicians have reported seeing cats glow red hot upon starting flooded RX-8's. Red hot cat = short life cat.

Cheers,

Gomez.

Took mine in earlier this week, and got a Ram king cab from Enterprise as a loaner. The they called and asked me to trade the Ram for a Cx7, while they replace my engine. The engine had just past 50,000 miles in hot but humid gulf coast weather. My dealership says I'm only the 3rd new engine in about 50 8's in for the recall. I have a 6 speed and did regular 3000 mile oil changes of dino 5w20.

Intersting info - especially the #'s. Had you experienced any of the problems associated w/the engine replacements?

I had a nasty idle, but I wouldn't have said I had significant power loss. Then again the Cx7 seems pretty peppy right now.

Just got back from Great Valley Mazda this morning.

Reflashed ECU and changed the two lead spark plugs, everything else checked out OK. They filled the tank, but didn't wash it. I told them about it and refered them to the letters from MNAO. They apologized and offered to wash it (I passed). Took them two and a half hours.

Service manager said no CA RX8s have had their engines replaced yet...

Their service was so-so. Any other Sacramento/ East Bay Dealers (California) that are recommended?

My local dealer said they had done some recalls and had no bad eng yet but did not know about the full white glove treatment. After I filled them in "Auto West-Roseville" they gave me the full WGT, and the CX-7 was sweet. I allways arm myself with the latest "TSB-print outs" when I go in and they listen well and make notations of my concerns.

I have been anticipating my recall for weeks. However, they left a message today and informed me that they are cancelling my appointment, which would have been tomorrow morning at 0845. Reason given: the recall will take 2 days, so they do not recommend dropping it off on a Friday, and thus have cancelled my appointment.

Does this sound odd to anyone? I'm hoping they are just backed up and giving me a sorry excuse... But I'll use what facts I have from the recall procedure docs and try to get their story on why my recall will take 2 days.

Unfortunately I've expended precious political capital getting the time off, making alternate transportation arrangements to/from dealership so that I won't have to drive a CX7... and now it will be months before I will be able to make another recall appointment happen.

I currently do 80% driving at 5, 10, 15, or 25 mph which is why I'm keenly interested in the fixed oil issue at low rpms.

Unless it's having issues, I don't think the recall fix should take longer than a day.

My dealer told me they did 50 recalls already and have not yet run into a bad engine.

He also pretended like he didn't know about the free fill-up. 50 recalls, and he doesn't know about the fill-up? Shady.... tsk tsk Mazda.

I think its tsk tsk dealer. I am sure at least one person notified this service manager of what they are SUPPOSED to do. If they are shady, they could be billing MNAO fraduently.

I'd avoid this dealership.

Nice. This should help your relationship. "Um, you are supposed to do this." "ok, we can do that." "No, I don't want you to do it, anyway."

It's nice they offered though

hmm... I wonder why they have trouble with some of the surveys.

They could have whipped it up not torqued anything or tested after putting stuff back together. Then it would have been done quicker.

Wow, how did you ever find the time to shop for and actually buy the car? What's your occupation may I ask? Sheeez...

Did you consider a moped or a 10-speed? Or maybe a motorized wheelchair?
