Another miataphile! Well, if you were around for the #4 trust bearing issue back in the day, this has kinda the same tone of doom. It'll pass though, just as the miata issue did. The recall involves issues related to loss of power stemming from a loss of compression during extended light/partial throttle cruising. The MOP maps are apparently inadaquate during these conditions and fail to provide enough oil in the chambers. I believe that is the bulk of it, though I did see carbon build-up mentioned.

Perhaps it wasn't a bad thing to sell the RX8 when I did. Got a good amount of money for it as well.

I have feeling though that mine would have probably been ok since I was pretty regular on maintenance and oil. Though it doesn't sound like that would have been the culprit of the problem.

So it's going to burn more oil now. I heard a side story regarding the cat converters being damaged as well, is there any truth to that...???
Yes, part of the recall is to check the catalytic convertor effiency. If it is out of spec, it will be replaced.

Interesting. All this ranting and raving about all rx8s may need new engines is making me consider getting rid of it. Considering that I have an 04 and have experienced the "clogged cat" at one point and loss of power myth. Burn more oil??? How much more oil can this car burn. Im really starting to think that it was a bad decision getting this car, but then again I can't turn time back. Wonder what fate will befall on the rotary now..

I spoke to a service advisor and tech at the local dealer today. Both said they have not heard anything about possible engine replacements. I'm pretty sure the service advisor would tell me cause he is my neighbors best friend. The tech did state he received info about some motors having seals that failed and caused coolant to mix with the oil. He has only repalced one engine because of a bad seal and maybe 1-2 trannys due to a grinding/whinning noise. He said back in the day the seals were made out of a different material but as the rotory engine evolved the design of the seals changed. Although he did not come out and say it I think he feels the 8's seals are weak...he descrided them as "Just rubberbands". He also stated he attended a big Mazda meeting about two weeks ago to discuss certain models/issues but a massive recall for the 8's was not one of the things discussed.

So... you had a clogged cat once, and you're now regretting getting the car because some people on an internet forum are discussing a voluntary recall that current estimates will be used to FIX 1% of the engines that are not functional (and the owners aren't yet aware of it)?

Half of you all are the biggest bunch of gloomy, whiney and mopey motherf*ckers I have ever seen.
Its just a g*d d*amn engine, not your blessed, sacred mothers spleen. Its only a part of the car - just a hunk of tin. It won't affect your kharma.
They'll give you a new one if you need it and then you can go back to your unlit, wood paneled basement and play some more WoW with your d*ck in your hand, chatting to your gamies about how your can't believe how sucky Mazda is until 4am.
J*sus f*ck!

Not good, as I drive exactly like you but I am just a little over 19K miles. I can't believe that Ohio is substantially hotter than Richmond, VA so unless you run synthetic oil (I use dino) I could still be screwed.

I guess time, and the vacume test, will tell.

I always say you get what you pay for(pretty sure most of you agree). And a new engine on a car like this? Call me crazy, but isnt that UNRELIABLE? Im not saying i dislike the car for that reason im just saying WHAT IF that 1% happens to be anyone one of us. If they test my motor and its good, fine ill take back what I said and ill keep the dang car. END OF STORY, i was just giving my input. I defend the rx8 as much as I can on other forums when I read people bashing it because of the engine. Don't get me wrong I love my rx-8, just the thought of getting a new engine is stressful...

ive read this complete thread and not seen one owner admit to causing concern with their vehicle but continue to bash mazda and their dealers..... read the warranty on certain mazda speed parts you purchase and see how they affect your factory warranty. the dealer will install them all day long selling parts is business... will aem replace yor engine when you drive through a water hole and lock the engine up....no neither will mazda...does a factory trained tech want to remove and replace your turbo and reinstall it to your specs with no technical training or manuel on how it operates or how to tune it with a new engine for warranty time......mazda techs train to repair mazda vehicles and mazda problems that are verifiable, not just to perform tsb's and reflashes just because you want them. bring your car in to the dealer for your concerns, we want to help but wasting peoples time for no reason is foolish and you are labled as one of those guys reading on the net again. dealers have limitations and are not always the bad guy mazda has a warranty and policy manuel that is binding with the dealers franchise agreement

Look at it another way - if you're one of the people who has an engine not performing up to spec, Mazda is doing you a favor, free of charge, they will test your engine and replace it for free. They could just pretend there is no issue till your warranty is over and get off scott free.

What they're doing should be given positive PR, what I'm seeing here looks like a backlash against it. They can't win with some of you...

If anything this dealership is uninformed. They also told me some good stuff about having my 8 serviced if I ever have a problem. I'm not worried about my car just trying to get additional info for others. I see it like this, if I can afford to buy it I can afford to fix it. There are a lot of ppl who continuously complain about there 8 but there are also a lot of ppl on this site that beat the living $#!+ out of there cars....go figure.

Far as I know, my engine is fine, but I do bring my car in to the dealer from time to time. If it's a recall and they are compelled to perform it, I need to know what they're going to be doing and if I'm covered. I don't mind a vacuum test, but if they also have to rev it for 30 minutes and perform some street tests, I'd rather not bother. Does this mean I have to stay away from the dealer if they HAVE to perform the tests?

I have no problem with the remanufactured engine. However, I cringe when I leave my RX-8 off to get an oil change and breathe a sigh of relief each time I get the car back from the service department with nothing more broken than when I dropped it off. Do I trust the dealership to pull and re-install the motor and still have everything work? Hell no!!!!!

Yeah, I can't argue with that. Actually, I'd probably buy a motor and install it myself before I dropped the car off at a dealership.
That sucks...

I heard about the recall on my local news in Denver. Yikes! my 04 just turned to 5,000 miles. What's this about a possible replaced piston engine? Naaaa can't be but I believe the recall letters are going out next Friday. I'm going out to rotate my tires

Can you name the local news station and give us their website if they have one? Some of us (like me) have dealers who say our website is crazy and dont know jack!
