Rotaries were banned from Le Mans after Mazda won it in 1991, hence the piston motor.

It was not because Mazda won with the 4-rotor, Mazda knew going into the 1991 LeMans that it was their last year to compete with the rotary engine. The FIA changed the rules to use F1 style engines.

Thats good news. LMP2 is not as competitive now as Porsche and Acura left.

Hmm, with only 3 LMP2 cars it shouldn't be too hard to get a podium. Too bad it took so long for this to come to fruitation. I think with Dyson they could have been competitive with Porsche and Acura.

Is that so? It's a shame, huh?
I wonder what the impetus was to have them restrict the engine to F1 style then.

Actually the FIA just put a displacement limit on the engines. This was before restrictor plates. Lots of engines were affected by the rule change. Not only the rotary.

From the Mazda website....

15. Last chance for glory

In 1991, the World Sportscar Championship, which includes Le Mans, was renamed the FIA Sportscar World Championship. The change included revised regulations that bunched the various existing classes, such as C, C2 and GTP, into just two classes: Category 1 and Category 2. Category 1 stipulated naturally aspirated 3.5 liter engines with no fuel limit. Mazda entered Category 2, which allowed greater freedom in terms of displacement, number of cylinders and turbos, yet restricted cars to just 2,550 liters of fuel. The governing body had decided, however, that Category 2 was to be discontinued from 1992. After 16 years and 12 attempts, the 1991 Le Mans was to be the final chance for Mazda and the rotary engine.
