Looks like the '04 RX8 has been added to the list of eligable cars for the Cash for Clunkers program.

Most of the cars on the list are anything but clunkers. Their only crime is poor mpg. Is this the official name of the program? Somebody didn't do their homework if this is the case. Here's the definition from Merriam Webster:

an old or badly working piece of machinery ; especially : a dilapidated automobile.

Poor mpg doesn't mean it works bad. That's the way it was designed. It may be inefficent but not a clunker by definition. They should have name it Cash for Inefficient Cars.

For good. No selling it for parts either. I'm waiting for the first report of a junk yard getting busted. Those parts are worth a lot. It's too tempting.

All the cars being trading in under the program will be destroyed.

im sorry but i think this program is bs unless you have a real shitty car to begin with and then too its getting you in more trouble coz your stuck with a payment on a car that (seeing you were driving a beater) cant really afford and will likely loose later on anyway ... just my 2 cents i could be wrong

Smells like Teen Spirit

Let's do the checklist:
1) High fuel consumption ( under 19mpg) CHECK
2) High depreciation - loses over 50% of value in 3 years: CHECK
3) Low reliability: Fails regularly and expensively: CHECK
4) Poor dealer network. Service failures abound: CHECK
5) Interior reeks of Eagle/AMC aroma: CHECK

Dang! It IS a clunker!!

As one of the commenters said....a 'petrol head' needs to get hired by the EPA to clean out of the eligible car list any car that is worth more than $4,500. And Not blue book. Actual sale value. Most of the blue book costs on those cars are less than what they sell for, due to collector's value.

If you run catless, you can easily get way over 20 MPG. . . oh wait, the govt. probably doesn't want that either!

I mean, yes it fits the criteria, but this '04 car, in most forms, is still worth well over 4500 bucks. So its rather pointless to add it to the list, unless the "cash for clunkers" program is going to run for a long time. Which doesn't make sense either.

And, at the risk of getting a political 3 day "banned" punishment... Has anyone else woken up and smelled the socialism? It smells like "new car smell"

The only 21st Century vehicle on the list (presumably due to poor mpg rating).

Guess I may as well get a new Crossfire and therefore my $9k off ($4,500 Fed + $4,500 Chrysler)!!! (j/k!)

Well this may be an option may companies match the 4.5k from gov't to their own 4.5k

so 9k is about the trade-in of the 8.... hmm

i'm tired of reading about the cash for clunkers program.

It's idiotic to even slightly entertain putting your rx8 into the program because the trade in value exceeds $4500.

remember, they take your car, they destroy the engine so it cannot be used, then they crush the car. You are not getting $4500 AND trade in value. You get just the $4500.

Last I checked, a 2004 base model still costs quite a bit more than 4500, even by private sale. So remind me why we have 200000 threads about this?
