No need to get pissy when some of us say "We don't get that terrible of mileage when we try not to hot rod around...."

It's really hard to keep your foot off that accelerator pedal when you know you could just lay it down and have the time of your life.

First off, I'd like to address the fact that it's hilarious you felt the need to post that we'll have to continue the discussion without, as if that's really going to affect us or the discussion in any major way. Of course we welcome anyone to discussion, but when someone pitches a fit and says they don't want to play anymore, we're not really going really care all too much.

I maybe got above 20 once or twice on road trips. Went slower than I wanted to so that rarely happened. It's not impossible to get decent (not good/great) mileage in the 8. Definitely have to drive in a "not fun" manner.

I'd say the 8 is being discontinued as a result of lower sales which are more likely the result of performance than gas mileage. The rx-8 has sold less than the competition since the beginning. Now the competition has newer models with increased performance and mazda has not offered anything to draw sales from those newer models. The nissan 350z actually had a shorter run than the RX-8 and they managed to sell quite a few more. Point is... the 8 was due to be retired.

I will agree that mileage is probably one of the big issues with the next rotary being released. The emissions standards are getting stricter and companies are having to do as much as they can to keep up or ahead of the regulations.

The base should be built for unleaded 87 and MPG. Then have optional with the 16x etc etc and the guzzler and the super, turbo etc.

Bring back 12A call it 12D (direct injection) for the high MPG / entry version. Then have turbo 13D and call it GSL-SE, yea.. bring back GSL-SE.

I don't think the gas mileage is really the RX8's main problem. I doubt there are too many other sporty cars that have the same "fun quotient", and get better gas mileage when driven to the limits. I think one problem has been that Mazda has never really marketed the car. I live in Rhode Island, and I'm asking other locals to correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't remeber ever seeing a TV commercial for an RX8 in the past five years. But I've seen them for just about every other model Mazda. With no TV exposure, how can the general public believe that an RX8 is the cool car to drive?

That's not going to be much use for those of use who can't FIT in a Miata. Also, I want something a bit more substantial around me.

I totally agree with you - Mazda has spent very, very little on marketing the RX8 in any way. Hard to know the reason. I don't think the mileage is really that big of an issue. When you really get down to it, gas is not that significant of a cost, compared to the cost of the car, and insurance. I think for most real driving enthusiasts, a couple of hundred extra bucks a year really isn't that big of a deal if you really enjoy the car!

If you ask me it's because Mazda knew that the rotary would have a cult fallowing and they knew they couldn't make the horsepower numbers and stay over 8 mpg. So they made sure the weight and suspension was good and they sold it as a fun to drive high revving car.

sure the above design is good but its a shift away from sports car and into an overburdened kuxury GT. to me, that wouod be a good design for a new Cosmo. the RX-7 has always been a pure sports car, even with the mandatory rear seat in japan and a 2+2 option in the U.S. on the FC. if the RX-7 were to be successful once again, it needs to go back to its roots as a pure sports car and stay away from the class cars such as the GTR in. lose most of the technological aspect and concentrate on modern design and overall function without losing the harmony between the chassis and the drivetrain.

Thanks MattMPS for posting that.... So, can we assume that the RX-8 is not dead? Will we see another RX-8?

Given time, im sure the company's designers would be more than happy to dip their hands into a new generation of sport racering, a pure bred that can be traced to Rx-7. Whether within this year, or a couple more... either way, it'll fun and worth the wait.
