Nucleus, if you're getting my hopes up for nothing you're going to make me cry...in front of people...some of which may be women. I hope you can live with yourself if that happens.

I agree that the gas prices are having an effect, but the drop in sales for the RX-8 is pretty drastic even compared to other cars in its segment that are a little thirsty on gas.
Personally, If you are going to use the "niche" title, I believe the RX-8 is more of a niche car that either the STI or MX-5, as no other car in the world has a Rotary Engine....with all its foibles...

Considering the 8 has been basically the same with no upgrades for 3 years, I think its done pretty well..

I agree with you mate..it is NO big deal..

A rotary is designed to "use" a little oil as part of it lubrication/cooling, the amount of oil depends on the owners RPM range and use/mileage of the car.
If you use the car for an hour a day compared to an owner who drives 3 or more hours a day then your monthly oil use is going to be lower.....the more you drive the more you use.

Because the Rotary has ALWAYS used oil does not mean that there is something wrong..and RX-8 owner gets to know his car and easily falls into a routine of checking oil level...to some its TOO much trouble, then again I say do your research before you buy...

But that's just it. car magazines are reporting on this issue so that people can be informed when researching. A lot of people don't like the idea of having to remember to check the oil so frequently or making sure the engine is warmed up before shutting down. These are legitimate real world occurrences that were very prevalent in the earlier models especially. What others are calling "misinformation" I'm calling dead on truth. Some people just don't mind the hassle.

Everything in life is pros and cons -- cost and benefit. You can lump these concerns into the "cons" bin for sure. How much they're weighted is up to you. Lack of research is not why the sales are down, that's for sure.

FWIW I think the 8 will eventually be replaced with the Senku. Saw an article on the Senku on MSN.ca today and to me it looks like it will be the RX8 version 2.0 It is expected to still use the rotary but together with an electric hybrid system. This could possibly be Mazda's solution for both MPG and power output.

Here's the link http://en.autos.sympatico.msn.ca/as/...6&src=minishow

Maybe, but how soon, not likely 2007. Remember the Ibuki concept was a also a hybrid but the NC Miata is not.

The SOME PEOPLE are US, the ones who bought the car, but for the majority of car buyers, it might be too much for them. The very early reviews did not dwell on the oil adding OR negatively report on fuel consumption. In fact the early reviews indicated a "30 percent better fuel economy... over past rotaries" (R&T April 2002). Nothing in the review indicates oil consumption. Of course back THEN, the HP was listed at 250 with "90 percent of peak torque available at 3250 rpm".

The review (by Sam Mitani) goes on to say: "The RX-8's straight-line performance was impressive indeed" " I found this powerplant , much like the Honda S2000's VTEC...produced most of its power in the upper rev range." When researching the car in 2002-2003 articles like this whetted my appetite and were all we had to go on. ( I wonder how much Mazda paid for reviews like these)

At the beginning of the review these lines NOW appears almost prophetic: in 1996 The car was called the RX-01 and the company was hoping to introduce the 220 bhp 2 seater for about half the price of its flagship sports car. It also has this line: Ford took contolling interest in Mzada and said " Upscale sports cars and rotary engines don't make sense in today's marketplace."

My point is this, the early reviews all dwelled on the POSITIVES with glowing praise of performance, but then, after the RX-8 had been selling, the reviews zeroed in on the negatives, and this may have had an effect on sales.

Damn your confidence. Now I'm going to want to wait until 2007. Any inside info on whether this thing will ever get FI? I need to know that I can pwn n00bs off the line. It's pretty much all I live for. And seeing as how I have a 147hp 4 banger right now I'm not exactly swimming in reasons to live.

The chatter that I've heard about future displacement is different than any I've seen mentioned on this forum. I can't say much else at this time.

Yes, I am skeptical but I also hope you're right so I don't want to bet against myself.

Do you believe everything you read on the Internet?

It will come with Chrome 30 inch wheels, Luis Vuitton leather interior, stereo with blinking lights, a new paint color (pink, neon green, or rainbow), 5-inch wheel gap to extend wheels to stick out, huge *** wing (front and back), and... puffy dice cubes on your rearview mirror. This is Mazda's idea of "upgrading" the RX-8. "Forget about power," Mazda execs say, "We need more bling!"

It's called misinformation when you exaggerate and overblow the dead-on truth. What some people consider a hassle is called being responsible and taking car of your stuff.

P.S. Except for the flooding. That is a major inconvenience, even if they do fix it for free. But, it can be avoided. I hate to start up my car to move it 10 feet anyway, and then there's the "rev to three grand or so trick" if you have to drive somewhere that's too close to get warmed up.

Haha, ill take 2! But seriously look at the "bling in the sti or the evo or the mustang... ford wants to sell a few more cars and inprove the image, so they put a supercharger under the hood. We are americans! We want power, as much as possible at all times! Thats how we roll. You want to sell a few more cars... give it few more ponies! Its all about bragging rights and in america we invented the muscle car. We want muscle and we want to flex it.
