You opinion on this purchasing scenario...

So I live in Mn and have found a Blue RX8 2004 GT MT in WI. It has 16XXX miles on it. Carfax and auto check reported a salvage title. When I called the private dealership what the story was, he grabbed the cars file and claims that he purchased the vehicle from an insurance auction. he claims that the previous owner owned it in illinois and that it was stolen. he says that stolen cars in Illinois are automatically salvage titled out, and the insurance company will then auction the cars off. he claims that the only work needed was a taillight assembly and some paint for the rear bumper scratches. he claims no engine work or major repairs were needed at all.

What do you guys think?? It was recently reduced price done to 13995 now...

I am deeply considering this purchase, but would value others opinions...

Sounds real sketchy. See if you can contact the insurance agency he bought it from and ask them.

13995? You can buy another car with the same miles for that price if you negotiate. Forget what people are asking, make the offer and a lot will buy. In this economy and time, not many people are buying the RX-8s

try this https://www.nicb.org/cps/rde/xchg/ni.../vincheck.html

Do you really want to buy a car that had a ragged odometer? It's not like he is selling for cheap, he is selling for 13995. The 06 I am buying is around that price.

Yes, could be true. My brother's RSX was stolen and recovered a month later. No damage except both front seats were gone. Car was sold as a salvage title.

Argh - now I have no idea! I seem to think that I could possibly offer 11,500 since he has had it for a while - he might bite. plus it being a salvaged unit. If he is telling the truth, I think it may be a good deal...

you could find a newer non salvaged 8 for a few thousand dollars more, why take the chance? I just got an 06 a few weeks ago for under 14500 that had only 19000 on it. I'm not saying a paid a good price but they dropped the price from their original of 16000.

Do not buy the car. You will regret it. It smells like serious trouble.

Yea don't get that car it sounds like it will be a headache.... Just shop around and be patient you can find a much cleaner car for that price or less. Granted it will have a few more miles. But you don't know how many miles that car has anyways since its odometer seems to have been rolled back....

Yeah I would take a pass. Take it from someone who needed a reman one week after buying his car. Don't do it and be patient.

Thank you everyone. I will hold off on this car. I do appreciate the suggestions from everyone. If anyone is bored, I would appreciate spotting a 8. I live in MN and would be willing to do a little bit of traveling for an 8.

the MUSTS: Winning Blue color, and a manual.

WANTS: Leather, GT.

I do plan on doing some upgrades like body kit, and intake/exaust, and later on when the engine needs to be reworked.

Thanks to anyone that can help!

There are plenty of them around, no rush on it. That car is worth $5K tops in auction with the history on it, the place is shady. There are reasons why cars end up in auction....

Don't buy this! Don't even know why you were considering it. This isn't amazingly cheap. And the car seems like it will come with serious problems. Just hold off.

I think he gets it. For an 04 w around 50k I would pay no more than 11. And I wouldn't touch one w/ 78k with a ten foot pole.

Yeah. I want to see about around the 30K mark. My plans are to keep the car for quite a while, and when it is time for engine problems, or seals to be replaced, I hope to have saved enough to do some serious engine mods and rebuilds. Mainly want to start off making it look and sound good...

I called a dealership and asked for his buyer to keep an eye out if he sees one and to call me too.

I swera, blue are one of the hard to find colors...my wife did this to me to make me work hard..haha!

Thanks!! Should I delete it now???

So how about this one...

http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.js...standard=false

car fax comes back as 3 owners, first had for like 8 months, then the next for 9 months, and third for 2 years 8 months.

HEy just figured how to attach a pdf of the car fax that a fellow 8 member was very kind enough to run for me!!!

What do we think of this one???? some minor scuffs, but if rims and bodykits are to come, it could be liveable....

It's an early built 04, do you really want to touch that?

I know it was the early 04's that had the most issues, however, as long as a mazda dealership claims that all recalls were performed, should it still be an issue?? Plus, the powertrain warranty will still be in effect on the rotary and seals. I just need to get buddy buddy with a service manager to authorize the warranty work haha!

I know I have seen feuds on the boards about some nay sayers claiming to stay away from the 04 models with every breathe in their body, but some also claim that they have not had any problems. This can be true with any car that I would buy. heck, I could buy a brand new one and have it go bad on me in a year.. you never know....
