Yakima roof rack questions
Hi gang,
What has been your experience with the roof rack? I want to get it but I remember somebody was saying there were cases when it slipped and scratched the paint.
Just looking at the roof edge, it seems it is not ideal for the roof rack to be attached to it unlike my prior cars. Besides Thule does not make a roof rack for the 8 which makes me wonder if it is a good idea.
I want to be able to put things like surfboards and a cargo box on it. Do you think this is too much load for this rack? I know it would have been OK on my prior cars.
Thanks,
ANZ

I have never seen a roof rack on an 8, sorry. If you want your bike in the car, it will fit in the back seat, just put the wheels in the trunk and wrap the frame in a sheet.

i have the saris bonz 3-bike rack, fits perfectly over the trunk and spoiler...the feet also are soft and do not hurt the paint.

I want to put sufrboards on it, not bikes. Thanks for the suggestions though.
I am guessing, I could put a bike on the roof rack but surfboards may generate too much aerodynamic lift and rip the whole thing off going 70 mph.
You do not like the idea of a roof rack on the 8? Wait until the winter when I will start a new thread about turning the 8 with the stock tires into a snow plow.

I read through the other thread and didn't see anything posted about the rack moving or scratching. I have a Yakima system that I carry a tandem bike on. The rack did move about an inch and left a scratch on the return where the clip hooks. I'm not real happy about it and am thinking about seening how my tandem does on my old "bones" trunk rack.
I think my rack moved because of the tandem rack not the Yakima system. The rack does not use the rear bar to stop forward and backward movement. The company (Rocky Mounts) said they have not had this complaint before and that the rear bar/rack interface should be fine. Anyway, I'd love to hear about any other movement problems people have had with their racks.
And, Expect 2 or 3 mpg loss when the rack is on the car.
