After the latest refresh, the 2004 Mazda RX-8 now qualifies for the cash for clunker program. If you have a beat project car or something, you can now get some money out of it by buying a new car......

Since when does an STI qualify as a fuel efficient vehicle?

The STi gets only one combined average mpg better than the 8, the STi won't qualify.

I call complete and utter bullshit. Just how is this "sad, but true" for the RX-8?

Doesn't make any sense. You can trade in any car, as long as it meets the rules - but that doesn't mean it makes any sense! If your ride gets 18mpg or less, plus everything else on the checklist - you're in - so how about a Rolls Royce, BMW, Lambo, perhaps a Mercedes or any number of other cars?

If you're willing to scrap your car (any car)...go for it, but an RX-8 would certainly need to be somehow degraded beyond use to even a body shop (and therefore undriveable and so ineligible) to make it theoretically worthwhile over a simple trade or resale, even for a '04 - they're all worth more than scrap (read just what 'scrap' value means below).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Important Things to Know

• THE CAR MUST BE IN DRIVEABLE CONDITION
• You are the registered owner, and have been for at least the last year
• The car has been continuously insured for the last year
• The car is titled in your name and has been for the last year
• Your vehicle must be less than 25 years old on the trade-in date
• Only purchase or lease of new vehicles qualify
• Generally, trade-in vehicles must get 18 or less MPG
• Must have “Clear” title, free of any liens or other encumbrances. If not, you need to get these cleared, I.E. YOU HAVE TO OWN THE CAR OUTRIGHT

The program requires the scrapping of your eligible trade-in vehicle, and that the dealer disclose to you an estimate of the scrap value of your trade-in. The scrap value, however minimal, will be in addition to the rebate, and not in place of the rebate.

Why will the scrap value be 'minimal'?

The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.

I don't mean your car is worth 4500. I am simply stating that since the rx8 is pretty much label as a gas guuzzler, you are going to have people that runs away from it. demand determines used car prices

^^^That's what I'm talking about.

I doubt any RX-8 owner would do it just to get ~4 to 5k off of a new grocery getter.

wait - doesn't the mpg have to be what is stated as the blended rate on the sticker? are we below that? i know a lot of us average below that but the stickers always show higher than real world.

Unless your RX8 is worth less than 4500 bucks, I don't see where this matters.

Here the run down on my '06 manual. http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/sbs.htm

And I looked at the list of cars anyone could buy and it was not as bad as I thought it would be.

But still....
Me 8 is staying with me until the wheels fall off or the Gov-ment comes and takes it away.

or.....
If gas is like $5 a gallon... Make that $4.25.

i'm guessing they blended to 18 then? news to me but i pretty much ignore all of the mpg threads including the one with details about the restatement of mpgs for us. so i guess that just means it qualifies at 18 mpg but would be a terrible idea to sell it for that since it is worth a decent amount more.

Yeah, I'm sure that's why... I'm sure it has nothing to do with your car being an auto-tragic and you wanting more power than you (and your insurance company) can handle.

They list the auto 8's as getting 19 mpg.... No clunker status. No $4500 for a car worth much more than that....

so? how is that sad ?

Ferrari's 612 Scaglietti gets 10/15. Is that sad ?

Shitz.

there are lots and lots of cars (like 70+ something model?) that qualifies this "CARS" program. not all of them are piece of **** tho.

the government just use this as an excuse to try to boost auto sales numbers. Do you really think those fat *** in the office cares about MPG/Pollution? Give me a break !
