Would it be a bad idea to..

Is it smart to buy an rx8 with 140,000 miles on it? It appears to be in great condition, but I'd like to know if there would be any maintenance trouble with it or anything like that. thanks.

possibly, need to know status of compression tests as well as maintenance history among many other things

Cost is also a factor you need to look at in case the engine is shot and would need replacing

That's my worry, i wont have enough cash to pay for that if the engine dies, So I'd be SOL. It just seems to me that not many people get these cars over 100K without new engines, so I'm scared to buy it. But it looks very nice.

Not really a good idea, and by the look of your myspace picture (avatar). It seems that your young and probably still in school.

Also what are you using the 8 for work, school, project? If your using it as a DD then I highly suggest you not to look into one with such high mileage, as all warranties are voided over 100k.

If you do buy a rx8 with over 100k miles you would to have cash in the bank. A reman renesis will run you between 2300-3200 and also install. Total probably around 4-5k depending on where you get it done. Also there could be transmission problems at that mileage as well so dont be suprised if that fails.

The thing about the renesis is you never know what might happen, there is not a certain time when the engine fails. Sometimes it just does. There are ways to prevent failure but its not 100% proven as of yet.

If your die hard set on this car look for one that is still within warranty spec for the next few years.

Yes, I am in school still, and that's what I was affraid to hear. I know alot about the car because my dad owned one, but I don't know about the car after 100K. His wasn't even close to that. I've also heard that once you hit the 100K mile mark, you've basically made it. You won't have many problems because most of the problems were with the 04's engine with 100k-

that is not true any really any means, once youve hit 100k you still will have wear on the engine and the seals will still be weakening and engine failure will still be a possibility.

I mean, Yes. I will be getting an rx8. but less than 10K miles a year will be put on it. Is their any way to find out how long the engine can last?

the engine will decide how long it will last. Get a compression test. Find out the maintenance history. From the day you own a RENESIS, take care of it.

The previous owners or maybe their dealership? Find out when the plugs/coils were changed. In all seriousness though, I would look for another 8. There are plenty in the for sale section going fro pretty cheap. And, some people on this forum actually take care of their vehicles, so you should check them out

Well the one Im looking at is on this forum. Its the silver black+red leather interior, 142000 miles. Look at it. It'll be on the first page.

If you can go and check the car out, go do that. Make sure you get the carfax and compression test. If everything checks out, and if you feel you'll be able to afford the car (general maintenance, etc), then do it

EDIT: also, if you can, try to bring someone who knows about cars

He's gonna work with me. i got him at 7650 at the moment. But yes. That was my problem. If it had a changed out trans and engine, id do it. Im just a little skeptical about it because it is a lot of miles for an rx8..

don't look at the price tag of this car. Even if it was selling for $10, would you be able to afford the maintenance, new engine, new tranny, etc?

That was another thought of mine. If it does go bad, I still have the car. And I have another car coming into the family for my sister and I to use. So I would be able to make money to replace any parts.

Nah. Im not looking for a commuting car my friend. It's going to be on the side. I'll stick with an rx8. The only problem with the one im looking at is the mileage. thats all.
