Question Would appreciate help with an Rx8 I am looking at

The story is that I am looking at a 2005 WWP GT 6 speed with 60000km(really low mileage). It has few minor issues though that I am wondering the cost to fix.

It has the appearance package. However it's obvious that the original colour of the package was lightning yellow. Whoever put it on this car did an awful job of painting it white as the paint is flaking off and you can see the yellow underneath.

There are a few paint chips that have turned a yellowy tinge.

Pretty much what I am trying to figure out is how much the appearance package is going to cost me to have repainted properly and where the best place to do it is. If not for doing it myself. Also what the best way is to repair these rock chips.

The asking price for the car is 12000$. I would really just appreciate any insight on how these issues would affect my offering price. Everything mechanically is in order. All the issues are purely cosmetic.

Thanks for the help everyone,
Shumster

You can buy another rx8 that needs no work on it. Keep looking. Take a look at the for sale section of this forum.

A good paint job costs thousands of dollars. If that doesn't scare you off, just call a shop for an estimate or take it over to one on a test drive.

Thousands of dollars just to have the appearance package painted? The actual body just needs a few touch ups.

Call a body shop for an estimate. All the paint should probably be stripped first. You don't want to paint over paint that's already peeling off.

You're better off just buying new "aero kit" parts, if the rest of the body paintwork is fine.
You can buy these for probably about $500. Point this out to the seller, let them know any buyer who isn't stupid will need to fix this, and then negotiate that amount of $ off of the final sale price.

12k for a 2005 RX8 is INSANELY high, specially if it has that issue with paint.

Do this.
It's possible that whoever put the appearance kit on the car did a bad paint job. There are also some old stories of an ebay store that sells them at a good price, but they paint over previously painted parts (often yellow). They have apparently changed that.

In Canada, prices are usually a lot more than what you'd expect to pay in the US.
However, $12k is still quite a bit. Follw elysium19's advice, and try to bring the cost down to $10-10.5 with a new/fresh painted aero kit

No no no no no people.

EVERY appearance package had a different color underneath the factory paint. For WWP appearance packages, the color underneath was yellow. This isn't a bad repaint job, it's a bad factory paint job

I have the same problem, always have from mile ~9,000, nearly 5 years ago. Doing searches for appearance package paint issues will show that it's a common problem.

The various advice on repainting is still largely the same.

Seriously? How come they put yellow first, then white? I don't know a lot about car paints, but I am just curious why they started to put yellow first?

$12k is WAY too high. Have you gotten any other tests (Compression!) done to make sure it really is just a paint issue?

It could be the color of the plastic that is yellow.

Questions like yours should be the the Canadian section not on the general forum

Sorry, I'll be sure to post in the Canadian section next time. In terms of a compression test I'm not nearly serious enough about buying this car any more. Mostly due to your guys' input. When I find what seems to be the right vehicle I'll certainly be getting a compression test.

I find it pretty funny that you guys think 12k is so high. 12k is pretty much as low as it gets here in Canada for a 2005. I'm seriously considering searching in the States and would just drive it back up.

Also, how much do you guys think a 2007 is worth with 60000kms(37000mi)? I see listings for around 14k. Is this high?

I just purchased a 2005 gt with 160 000km for 4800,loaded, extras, and certified and emissions tested. My car is on the higher side of mileage, and needs a couple things changed, but this is to give you an idea.

There was a 2004 with 130 000km selling for 5.2. and a 2004 with 110 000km selling for 5 (but this car was problematic and beaten to ****). This is all from me looking about a month ago.

I'd keep looking.

What area are you in? Those numbers are honestly unheard of to me.

Sorry, forgot to mention my location. Going to add that in my profile..

I live in Mississauga, Ontario. These prices were unheard of to me as well.. hence my purchase. I believe I was just in the right place at the right time.

When I sold my 2004 with a brand new engine, replaced under warranty, I was hard pressed to get more than $9K CAD. I also had a few issues that would require paint work etc.

Take a look in the For Sale section here and see what 2004/2005s are going for in canada.

Canada is a fair bit higher than US prices. I got my 2011 R3 with 18000kms for $27k, and I did a good deal of searching around for pricing.

I recall that brand new the canadian 8 was about $10k more expensive than US
