Unhappy The worst thing to happen to an 8 owner

so i was driving home from my friends house last night and some animal jumped out in front of me.. me being the compassionate but also idiotic driver my first intial action was to swerve out of the way. as i jerked my car it caused me to fish tale and slam into a telephone pole.

the whole drivers side is wrecked and the front tire is pointing inwards towards the engine. the airbags didnt deploy as i hit the drivers side suicide door but its bad. real bad.

i am devestated. i contacted my insurance but its going to be a few days before they get to look at the damage. my gut feeling is that its beyond repair.

Has anyone else crashed thier RX-8? Was it totaled? Did you wind up getting it fixed? Did you.....cry?

Just wondering....

It's a bad thing, because you have to choose between your conscience and your wallet.

An adjuster told me once in a similar situation, "Hit the animal. Always hit the animal." Because then you have proof of what happened, and often the damage is less, so you pay your deductible and it doesn't go against you.

But when you swerve, you can't prove anything to the insurance company. They will have your ***** on a platter before it's over with. It's a no-win situation if you have a conscience.

I crashed my first RX8, it was totalled. Worst feeling in the world, trust me. If you hit hard enough for the roof to be badly damaged or the a-pillar and so on, say goodbye to that one. Most likely by the sounds of it, it's totalled. Sorry bro

never swerve. brake if you can. never swerve. i totalled my 8 but insurance didnt get it up on a lift when they came out. so they didnt see that my entire suspension was FUBAR. cost a total of $14k on a $17-18k rx-8.

Hit the brakes or hit the animal is what I've always been told.. Even if you hit a big animal, the damage it can cause is minimal compared to smashing yourself into a tree or another car and can potentially result in your, or someone else's, death.. and all that for a stupid animal.

Sounds like you're more or less OK though, which is good, just sucks about the car =\

sorry to hear that; I know its tough. Everyone says swerve but its always different in the actual situation when you instincts take over. Just look out the window every morning and be happy your okay. You can replace metal but you cant replace your life. Good luck with everything.

Glad you're okay...I will hit my brakes, but I don't swerve to miss an animal. When he was young, my uncle slammed his brakes and swerved when a rabbit ran in front of him...rolled his car...right onto the rabbit.

glad you're ok. and hopefully this will work out in your favor. you did a good thing, not the smartest thing when an animal pops out, but i always swerve. i couldn't imagine getting out of the car and watching something die. what kind of animal was it?

I once annihilated an animal. I made a thread about it too. Next time kill that ****, all I had to do was replace my front lip, clear corner, and engine undercover.

he did not do a good thing, photo chick. this is terrible advice. if you can avoid hitting it by braking, do so. otherwise, you have to look out for yourself. killing yourself over a friggin possum is never a good thing

no no! i was saying it's not a good idea to swerve, hence, saying it's not the smartest thing to do. but i'm an idiot. i've gotten myself into lots of trouble trying to save animals, never with a car though. i meant that his intentions of protecting the animal was doing a good thing. sorry if that was misinterpreted.

braking is always the thing to do if you can. otherwise, just keep going in your direction, since when you're scared, all your movements are exaggerated.

Sorry to hear. First instinct it always to swerve, but really we should just hit the animals.

Hope everything works out.

PC: i got it now.
goose: my accident wasnt from swerving to protect furries. it was from being a retard. but ive seen enough problems caused by animals to know that you never swerve.

I hit a ferret the other day, sucked but I'm not about to put myself in danger for an animal. Natural Selection ya know. My mom swerved for a squirrel when she was young (before I was born) in a 1969 vette and ended up slamming into a Cadillac, from that I learned swerving is bad.
