It was a tiny chip with 1cm crack.

So I was pretty pissed the whole day and when I get back to my car after work. I see this BEAUTIFUL 20cm crack in a L shape! Guess it was from the car being in the sun and heating up that made it crack like that!

I'm thinking this will require a replacement. I did a search on people who had their windshield replaced and no one really mentioned if the RX8 requires a special windshield (I have the integrated Homelink and autodimming rearview mirror). Does it?

Here's a pic that made me almost CRY!

It's pretty obvious to me what happened here... They're just not fans of the Winning Blue... HATERS!! :p

wow, unbelievable! I read your post two days ago....and was thinking how BUMMED I'd be if that happened to me. I live in Southern California.....and there just don't seem to be as many loose rocks around here to attack our windshields.

Well, wouldn't ya know it....less than 24 hours after reading your bummer of a post....I'm behind this old, crappy, white caravan....going about 35MPH....and a rock the size of a big marble came shooting out from behind it. It almost seemed like it was in slow motion! Well, it put a big, fat spiderweb about 8 inches across ...and I'm now one of the newest members of the "I own an RX-8, and I need to buy a new windshield" club. My insurance company doesn't have comprehensive out here, so this is coming out of my pocket (and also delaying my new intake!). Does anyone know a quality, affordable windshield replacement company in SoCal?

Thanks!

Does the auto dimming mirror have batteries? If not that would explain the difference.

Thanks for the comment guys. I was away on a business trip so I was away from the internet (hence having rx8club withdrawal). All weekend, all I could do was think about the stupid windshield.

I asked my father to make some calls while I was out of town and the repair guy said he could fix it ... I'm kinda skeptical because of the size but since the guy is going to guarantee his work ... whatever right? It's 35 bucks. As for my insurance, I didn't take out glass because in Canada they really rape you on the premium and deductable. Premium a year is 200 bucks and deductable is 250. The fellow quoted for an 8, a windshield replacement is 350. So not really worth my while unless I have it replace multiple times a year.

Good to hear that the homelink and autodimming is not affected by the windshield
Well, I'll let you guys know what happens!

I drove around for a couple of months or more with a crack that size, then a couple of weeks after I finally fixed it, a lady rear-ended me and totalled my 8.

Hope you have better luck than me.

Has anyone who has had the windshield replaced noticed scratches in the paint finish around the windshield? I know that there is no gentle way to get the old windshield out, but there has to be a way to protect the pillars and roof, right? I just had mine replaced and noticed the scratches at both top corners... They aren't incredibly deep, but since I live in MN, I don't want to give the road salt any place to take hold and start the rusting process. The glass co is going to inspect it tomorrow, so we'll see what they have to say. I hate complaining about relatively minor issues, but I'd really be kicking myself if this lead to rust a few years down the road!

Anyone know of a good, decent priced shop in the Towson/Baltimore area? I just got quoted $600 by Safelite (for either the dimming or non dimming rear view).

Thanks!
