Will pedestrians bounce off our cars

and carry on their merry way? I have heard we have some type of soft bumpers. Can anyone shed any more light on this subject?

The RX8 was designed with the pedestrian in mind. In the event of an accident a pedestrian may fair somewhat better versus something like an SUV.

I don't think that they would just bounce off and go on their marry way, but they could survive what would be an otherwise fatal accident.

The hood on the RX-8 is designed without rigid stiffeners in it, it also has crumple space between the bottom of the hood and the engine. In the event of a collision with a pedestrian, the low front bumper sweeps them off their feet and onto the hood. The hood collapses to cushion the impact. That's the theory anyway. I'll pass on putting it to the test.

I just wish rock chips would bounce right off too. Just Zaino'ed my 5th coat this weekend and spotted 2 little chip spots...both are like a series of 3 tiny chips in a row on the hood. Like a rock skipped off or something. Gonna look closer I'm hoping it can be Claybared off (i.e. it's not a real scratch) but the prospects look bleak.

I wonder if having like 20 coats of Zaino offers any protection from paint chips.

If you really want to know, fly me up to NJ and we can test it out. You can stand in the middle of the road and I'll run you over at 10 mph iterations starting at 25mph until I draw blood. I'm open next weekend so just PM me with the flight details.

It seems like we have weak paint. Mine has chips too! Time to invest in the clear bra.

I am sorry but the subject was just so funny sounding.

I kept imagining someone bouncing off(with the cartoon "boing") going weee!!!

but in all seriousness I hope it never happens to any of us

I got to go for a little ride on the hood of an SUV once. Not fun. I applaud Mazda for thinking of pedestrians. Let's just hope none of us ever really put this to the test.

I'd prefer a kevlar or titanium blade to skewer large SUV's. Maybe with an explosive tip just to even up the repair costs a bit.

Btw, you've all seen the new grill airbags, right? No joke, they deploy upon light frontal impact.
