Why you don't let your parents buy your car
Okay I know I'm probably going to be flamed for this but my dad gave me a low interest loan for my eight about 6 months ago and I have nearly paid him halfway back for it by now... anyway this gives my parents some sort of control over what car I drive still.
So someone decides to tell my mom that rwd sports cars are unsafe in the snow. This of course starts a **** storm and to make a long story short, if I can't prove that the blizzaks I have on my car make it safe in the snow then its bye bye to my eight and hello to something awd. It hasn't snowed here yet so I don't yet know just how much blizzaks will improve car control in the snow. Can someone with experience weigh in on how well an eight on blizzaks will compose itself in the snow?
I'm really not liking the option of losing my 8... even in my short tenure with it I've fallen in love. I drove a Mazdaspeed6 and while it was quick it felt big and carried itself like a drunken elephant compared to my 8. WRX's are too unrefined, 325xi's are too humdrum. Just in case I'm forced to get rid of my car anyone else have any ideas for a used awd car that I can get under $18k

wow, this argument didnt come up earlier? My parents had this argument with me, and it doesnt matter what type of drivetrain you have, tires for the correct season are the best. Specialize. Also, if you are that age, im sure your parents dont want you to drive in the snow period which is what happens with me anyways. No reason to go out before the roads are plowed.

A snow tire won't stop you from skidding out in the snow. It will help quite abit with traction, but in the end it won't make it "fine" just like it was dry out.
If you're on ice you'll still slide/won't be able to stop/etc...
Just don't turn DSC off and don't push too hard around corners, take it slow.
If you need to make a long commute and it's snowing+accumulating, you're better off driving a 4WD or FWD car for that drive. RWD just is not easy to drive in the snow (especially if you have no experience, and it's standard).

AWD and FWD might help you from getting stuck in the snow compared to RWD, but they don't help you stop any better. Proper tires for the conditions is what you want regardless of the type of car. Besides, don't STIs and EVOs come with summer tires anyway? Except maybe in Canada, you'll still have to get snow tires for them.

All wheel drive is MORE dangerous in the snow. All wheel drive helps you speed up, but does nothing for slowing you back down again. When I lived in new england, after the first years snow our local police blotter would always be 3 times as large, and consists entirely of people driving AWD SUV's that slid off the road and into a ditch.
Chances are your parents rode in RWD cars through many winters. hell, they've probably learned to drive on a RWD car, with no seatbelts, no airbags, and drum brakes. They're still alive. Why would you have more trouble with a rwd car that has airbags, seatbelts and traction control.
I would go with the line of reasoning that what makes a car dangerous in the snow is the driver. Someone who drives faster then the conditions allow is going to have problems in snow no matter what car they drive, and that it wounds you deeply that your parents trust you enough to let you get a car like this, and then suddenly decide that you are somehow no longer responsible enough to own one because snow is on the ground. If they didn't think you were a responsible driver in the first place, why would they buy you a sports car?

Well personally AWD or FWD or 4WD is the best in the snow but being 20 yrs old just get ur way out of it....just print some reviews about how good the blizzaks are and let her read etc etc but personally i would find a winter beater to drive in the snow one it gets aro0nd bettter and saves ur 8 from the salt.....(I bought my winter beater when i was living in the north for 350 bucks andsold it 5 months later 4 500 haha

Any car, when driven responsibly, is perfectly safe in the snow. Likewise, any car driven by an idiot, is bound for trouble in snow/slick conditions.
The real question is if OP's parents think he's an idiot or not. Either hes an idiot, and shouldn't be driving the 8 at all, or he's responsible and is fine in an 8 no matter if there is snow on the ground or not. Parents can't have it both ways.

Just tell your parents if you cant drive a rear wheel drive car in the winter you cant drive a fwd or awd either just as everyone has said all that is going to do is get you to go faster down the road, so your actually not any safer b/c your hauling *** in the snow. then just have them drive you everywhere as if you were 15 again, if they want to treat you like a little kid might as well go all the way, hell move back in w/ them too. that may change their minds

Some very valid arguments here... I'm hoping my dad will finally realize that no car will ever be "safe" enough for her. My first car was a 92 Mitsu Montero, that was sold because she thought it would tip over easy, next car was a volvo s40, that was sold because she thought FWD wasn't good in the snow. Next car was a Audi A6... and even the AWD couldn't please her. This is ******* crazy. I'd like to stick with a car for more than 6 months. Especially the first car I've actually paid for.
I'd like to think of myself as a responsible driver. My parents are ones that definitely would NOT help me with a sports car if they didn't feel I was capable of handling it. I do however like to get on it a little bit when the conditions allow. I mean what's having an 8 if you can't enjoy it once in awhile. I do understand the dangers of driving in the snow even though this is only my 5th winter of driving. Never been in an accident in any season and I don't think having my rwd 8 on blizzaks will be detrimental to that record. Just wish my mom could see that and let me make my own decisions. I understand she wants me to be safe but you have to be reasonable too.

Dude, all jokes aside, tell your mom to let go. Sit down, have a serious discussion with her, and notify her of the fact that a mac truck, is no safer than a Lotus elise, nor any less safe than a Hummer. You are the driver, you are in control of the vehicle, you are ultimately responsible for your fate on the road. Also, remind her that there are other drivers on the road, and if they make a mistake you may have an accident that is no fault of your own.
Notify her that you will be responsible in this car and any car that you drive, but make sure that she recognizes that you have had this car for the past few months and are comfortable in it, and it would be more hazardous for you to have to adjust to a new vehicle in this snowy and rainy season. Acknowledge that you realize that she is merely trying to protect you, but state that you feel that it is in the best interest of your safety that you drive this car this winter, due to its Stability control, traction control, superb handling, 50-50 Weight Distribution which can help you save the car more easily. Not to mention the side curtain airbags, seat airbags, The "Specially Designed" B Pillar that no other car in its class has.

I have tried all those things... it sucks being the first born she still thinks she has to control everything. I'm not really looking for advice on my mom I'm asking if Blizzaks do truly make a difference. I'm just hoping the car will speak for itself. If she finds it acceptable and I can finally get her to understand that no car is perfect in the snow then I'll be keeping my eight. Indefinitely.

Ever try running tack with sandals? It's the same deal. Wear the proper footwear.
And do you ever actually drive when snow is on the road? I'm sure your mother would prefer driving you maybe five times a winter than having you drive your self when the white stuff is on the ground. Just don't drive in horrid conditions.

buy a beater. My friend just found a perfect running Mazda 626 for 800 bucks, lol. Runs great with minimal rust! Or be like me and coax the ladyfriend into giving me her car for the winter if I put gas in it and change the oil
