You realize that there is actually no "Mazdaspeed RX-8" in Grand-Am? :)
And the ST class Mazdaspeed3 is relatively close to the street Speed3. Most of the work is engine build and safety features. ST class rules don't allow all that much in modification. The ST class RX-8s are not Mazdaspeed RX-8s, but just base Sport model RX-8s with added safety features and some other within-rules modifications. The GT class RX-8s are NOT "Mazdaspeed" RX-8s, they are tube frame chassis purpose built race cars that share the same body shape along with width, height, length, and wheelbase dimensions with the street RX-8s, along with the general idea that they are rotary powered. Any actual parts it shares with the street RX-8s are cosmetic in nature that are not performance related. Anything performance related is not from a street RX-8. And as a purpose built race car, there is very little that is not performance related. (I do not have a full parts list, so I may be slightly in error, but having spent time following the teams, talking with the crew, and even one day over the pit wall with the #69, I recognize what they actually are) Even the body itself isn't body parts from a street 8. It's a thinner, lighter shell over the chassis. Here is a pic of the #40 from Dempsey racing just after getting it back from a chassis rebuild that might drive home that particular point a bit better. http://a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphot...5_715720_n.jpg |
Yup...seen it...touched it... But if you want apples to apples that is really about the best you are going to do.

this has been discussed a few times.
IIRC, Mazda did consider a supercharged MS RX8 for a 2005 model. https://www.rx8club.com/series-i-major-horsepower-upgrades-93/unofficial-us-mazdaspeed-supercharged-rx8-43727/ AND i have held that supercharger and upper manifold in my hands. there are pictures here somewhere AND

Technically, there were 2.
2003 (Japan) Mazdaspeed. 300 cars, slightly tuned ECU and MS trim packages. 2004 (Japan) Mazdaspeed Version II, only 300 produced, same as before with different colors. is correct |
