Why no coil-on-plug for rx8?

Hi all
I searched but found nothing
Around the turn of the century it appeared that coil on plug was becoming quite effective. Given the rx8s ignition woes i was wondering why coil on plug wasnt a potential solution ? Is it simply lack of suitable coils or is it a dead technology anyway?

Coil on plug is the opposite of a distributor. While our coils don't sit directly on the plug, it works out to the same thing, each coil drives 1 plug and the whole thing is orchestrated by computer.

I suspect putting the coils on the side of the engine, exposed to road splash and debris was deemed a risk.

Yep, one decent puddle and you are going to have problems.
