Was driving my mom's BMW, misjudged the distance till the next gas station. We had 1 mile left according to the trip monitor 30 miles from that gas station. Once that mile ended it went to 0, then to ----, then after a little bit longer we were at that gas station. I think that's about as useful as the gas gauge we have now... you generally know when you're near low.

There is one on my mom's volvo, it is kinda cool to watch the instant mpg, try to get it as low as i can. But the miles to empty is way optimistic, 500 miles to empty tank, on 14 gallons, my butt.

I don't know if 2009 RX-8 would have it, since it has the 6CD/MP3 (don't know if it is the same head unit)
i figured the rx8 would have the same stereo, but nope. i have a 6cd changer so i went out and tried this. does not work. wtf, why does the mazda3 get this? this is retarded. i have a 2005, and a 2005 3s said it worked for him. anyone with a 2006+ want to give it a try?

I think these things would drive me nuts and would distract my driving experience. I'm a numbers kinda guy and seeing mpg, miles to next oil change etc.... would send me to the nut house very quickly.

I reset it everytime I fill up. It says X amount of miles to the gallon average. I do the math on my calculator, fill it up at the same gas station using the same gas pump and not topping off and its accurate to a tenth of a mile per gallon.

I have one of these on the wife's Passat. I find the instant MPG readout useful when I want to save fuel- it's kind of fun actually, trying to drive to squeeze the last drop out of it.

MY feeling is these things would be very useful to some drivers. I was going to start a thread on this, but I have to tell you that even with gas at over $4.50, people still drive like animals, mashing their accelerators on the highway just to tailgate the next driver they can find.

And while this is purely anecdotal, I came to another conclusion: those who bought Lincoln Navigators when gas was 2.00 a gallon, don't give a rat's *** about their mileage even now- the worst offenders of wasteful driving tactics are SUV drivers.

If more people drove with SOME consideration for their fuel consumption, we could get the price down real quick.

This is why I never believed the guys on this forum who claim they nver do better than 15 MPG. I beat that on every tankful since I bought it, and I have to believe that some people just have lousy driving habits and blame the car.

we also "got one of dem PCMs" that have the capability to read out all the standard info.

i see this info when my accessport is connected. its stupid that mazda did not include it in the car. even as a hidden easter egg a la the mazda3.

You guys sound like such rx-8/mazda fan boys.

They should have included one, the information is available and even entry level vehicles have them. They probably decided not to include it because it increases the cost slightly and they were targeting a specific price/profit ratio. Not because as some people above would suggest that they were on some quest for performance (what utter fan boy nonsense).

A big part of loving a car is accepting and dealing with the things you hate about it. I hate the fuel economy, I hate the cheap center console pieces, I hate the straight line acceleration and lack of low end torque but I'm willing to put up with all of that and more for that moment when I'm driving on a twisty mountain road (like this weekend) or driving through a mountain tunnel with the windows open and hitting 9000 RPM.

Be objective for once in your life guys.
