Why does mazda always do this

I only get my oil changes from my dealer, to avoid them hassling me over any engine problems. Everytime i get my car back and i check the dipstick the oil is way over the full line, its like 6 inches above the full mark. I know this has been discussed but it really pisses me off! sorry had to vent, someone should send mazda memo.

They probably figure most owners never check and top off their oil so they try to leave more margin of error. Or maybe they just don't know how to read a dipstick. Yeah, that's probably it.

Too much oil is a bigger problem than not enough in many cases with cylinder engines. I'm not sure about our rotaries but I would definitely be asking questions.

The last time I got my oil changed at the dealer exact same problem. I showed the service writer and he asked if I could wait while he got this corrected. I did and they brought it in and drained a pint. The mech came out and showed me. The service writer was experienced and handled it correctly. I get there full attention when I'm in there.

Six inches? That cannot be good.

My dealer also overfills. Usually about halfway up the flat above the top mark, sometimes up to the top of the flat. I've been meaning to figure out just how much that is, but I think it's less than a pint and I have not had any trouble.

Every time I've paid someone to change oil, in any car, they've overfilled it. I think that they just keep putting in whole quarts until the oil comes above the full line.

Yeah, they always overfill mine, but fortunately not by a whole lot. Six inches over the fill line is a hell of a lot, I didn't even know that was possible.

Maybe they filled it with enough oil for an 09? I've never had a problem with the dealer overfilling

The problem is overfilling the oil causes it to be shot up the venting or relief tube and it ends up in your intake.

I've had an oil change at two different Mazda dealers (San Jose and Tracy) and so far the oil level has been spot on full. The Tracy one was nice enough to do it for free too, I think because mine was the first '09 they serviced. Maybe I've just been lucky.

I think the reasons for the overfill are because of: 1) they don't read the manual, which is pretty clear as to the capacity, or 2) it takes a while for the new oil to drain into the pan, so if they take a reading without waiting, they'll think it's underfilled.

In both cases, just a lack of thinking.

^..............no, I believe they do read the manual and fill it up with the capacity it says. The problem is....when they drain it, they don't account for what's left in the oil coolers and don't get that out......hence they overfill! That's why I always do it myself!

Exactly, the oil coolers do hold a bunch of oil. When doing changes is not almost impossible to get a complete oil change. the only way to get some of the oil in the coolers out would be jack each side of the car up while draining. This will let gravity help with getting the oil from the cooler back to the pan. The other way would be to do a complete flush.
A slight over fill isn't anything to worry about but 6inches is crazy.
I also get pissed about over filling. But I send my car to a shop that is less then a mile from me and now I just bring 4 quarts of my own oil to the shop and top it off myself when I get it home. I rather do it myself that way there isn't a screw up

Yeah, it's just a theory that I have, but seems plausible. I always jack it up like you said, to drain more out and you will get quite a bit more out.
