Why does everyone want to race me??

Ok, so first of all, I love the Rx8. I have come to terms with the fact that it lacks somewhat in straightline speed, and I am fine with that. I think that the car is fun to drive, and has all the power that I (19 year old college student) really need. The only thing that pisses me off about driving it, is the fact that I cant pull up to a light, or get on the freeway without a modded out mustang, 350z, STI, etc. pulling up beside me wanting to race. It is getting more frequent lately and is really starting to get on my nerves. I didnt buy the car to be a street racer, I bought it because its one of the best looking cars on the market IMO and is fun as hell to drive. What do you fellas do when this happens to you? Is there some intl. sign for "I know your car is faster, I dont care, I dont want to race"?

There was a particular incident the other day with a 350z on the freeway. He knew I didnt want to race and still paced me for a good 3 miles, almost taunting me. I was gettin extremely pissed off and was considering inviting him to pull over to settle it a different way, when he peeled off to his exit.

gonnahanvan8 12-28-2005 12:36 PM

Keep a Dildo under your front seat. When this happens, wave it at them furiously.

Papapump51 12-28-2005 12:37 PM

Wll I have a Greddy exhaust on mine and what I do if I am at a light I first look over and laugh at them and say you can not be serious? then I give it a tap on the gas...then usually just say lets goto a track there buddy anyone can go fast in a straight line. I just think it is funny in General, I get it all the time on my race bikes..some jack ass punk will fly up on me and do the same thing....lets drag race!!!! please bitch...lets go to the track and you will finally get rid of that strip down the center of your tire because you never lean that thing over....

bascho 12-28-2005 12:37 PM

Big Mike. The 8 is no slouch......show em' whats up. I have taken out countless Mustangs and 350Z's that were driven by kids that had no clue how to shift for speed. A lot of people put down the 8 for acceleration....but I have not been disappointed yet. Sure, there are faster cars.....but unless the driver is experienced, that doesn't mean shit. I am not saying that I am some unbelievable driver.....but I can usually hold my own in my 8. And on the highway....shiiiiiiiit, the 8 has a great top end. I find myself in triple-digit speeds on the way to and from work everyday without really trying.

playdoh43 12-28-2005 12:39 PM

do you have aftermarket parts that are clearly visible on your car?

Ive only gotten challenged once by a maxima, Evos and Stangs and Stis pull up beside me all the time, they never wanted to race..

my friend on the other hand has some aftermarket areo parts on his car and he said people wants to race him all the time.

QBallz 12-28-2005 12:41 PM

I personally just ignore it, wave at the person, or give them the tumbs up and smile stupidly at them.

Animagix 12-28-2005 12:45 PM

comes with the car dude, I expected that before I got into my 8. What bugs me is that minivans want to test me as well (yeah, you homies with 20 kids and the chrome rims on your ford aerostar-sorry, wasn't meant to be racial in any way, I live in queens/brooklyn). I don't have many kill stories to share because I'm just some dude who loves driving me and my hot ass asian girlfriend around to a movie, dinner, etc. while those ricers are in a hurry speeding home to download tera patrick's latest dvd.

I've held my own when they wanna get down and dirty... but only on the twisties, I've eaten up a few riceboys on the jackie robinson parkway and that's not even pushing it... and also don't feel compelled to prove anything to anyone, but to occassionally embarass a riceboy with his butchy girlfriend, bob is priceless.

playdoh43 12-28-2005 12:52 PM

are you sure you arnt imagining it? sometimes people are just driving fast and agressively. One of my other friends thinks everyone that drives fast around him wants to race him.

you sir.... are a GENIUS!!!

Big_Mike_4488 12-28-2005 12:59 PM

Nah, I dont think I'm imagining it. It mostly happens on the freeway, cars will either slow down or speed up, and then pace me, while reving furiously. I usually just look at them and laugh, and they usually get the point. I know the Rx8 has some power of its own, but if an STI or heavily modded Mustang pulls up beside me, we both know they are faster, why cant they just let it be?

Only mods on my car are fender strakes and tint.

dazygirl415 12-28-2005 01:10 PM

Sorry Big Mike, but it comes with the car. The same happens to me, only about half as much since I'm a girl and some male drivers think I can't handle my own.

I always shake my head and tell them I don't race. Then I hit WOT when I accelerate away so they can hear my intake, midpipe and exhaust and make them wish even more that I raced.

You could always rev it up at a stoplight and let the idiot peel away while you non-chalantly drive normal.

The constant "wanting to race" isn't so bad when the other driver knows it's all in fun and it's like a big game of tag and leave it be when the fun is over. But then you have those morons who keep at it and hound you do race them. Those jerks deserve the dildo.

Nemesis8 12-28-2005 01:11 PM

Just nod your head in acceptance that you have a car they are lusting over :)

gonnahanvan8 12-28-2005 01:17 PM

They are actually paceing you because they want to look at your car. They rev the motor because they wish they could feel the purr of the rotor. The only place to race is at the track. It's not worth the ticket, cost, damage or injury that usually ensues. If the 350Z botherd you, go drive one, you will find that it's no where near as much fun as the 8.

allmotorRX8 12-28-2005 01:18 PM

no on street racing. :nono:

RotoRocket 12-28-2005 01:35 PM

Happens to me ALL the time.

My wife just made a comment about it to me a week ago.

I always ignore them.

Street racing is a liability (in more ways than one) waiting to happen, no matter the time, date or street.

Take it from an attorney.

It's an ear cleaner officer.

playdoh43 12-28-2005 01:46 PM

most people that continously bothers you are cowards, thats the type of people that goes out picking on cars they know are slower but scared sh*tless when they get challenged by a faster car. They are insecure people. The type of people that isnt affraid to race anyone wouldnt pick on you in the first place. therefore theres no point steping down to their level.

gonnahanvan8 12-28-2005 01:50 PM

The cool thing is, if you get in a fight, just smack em with it. Who they gonna tell?

Big_Mike_4488 12-28-2005 02:14 PM

Thanks all, had a feelin all I can do is ignore them, just needed to hear it a few more times.

(I will definately keep the dildo thing in mind, thanks for the suggestion!) :yelrotflm

BlueFrenzy 12-28-2005 02:21 PM

Heh ... it's funny but not only doing punk kids in riced out civics rev at me but rednecks with the big HEMI pickup trucks try to race. My car isn't modded at all... WTF. I just let them speed off and wave at them when we meet at the next stop light. The funniest incident was when some kid at a stop light looked like he was itching to go, up ahead, I can CLEARLY see a cop hiding behind a pine tree with his radar gun .. the kid takes off thinking he's the king and next thing he knows ... the sirens went off and cop chased after the kid.

gonnahanvan8 12-28-2005 02:30 PM

This all brings to mind the scene in "Meet the Parents" when they race to get home.

rx8wannahave 12-28-2005 02:37 PM

You know what, take the crazy approach (if the sex toy thing is too much...you might find someone who thinks it's a suggestion...lol)...

Just stare at them and smile, do not respond in any other way or say a word...just stare...

lol, they will probably speed off

Papapump51 12-28-2005 02:48 PM

the best thing I was just thinking is....the guys in the mustangs and the Hemi trucks...no clue how we would do but Imagine if you did keep up with one then at the next light just smiel and say ..." hey you know your 5.8 litre just got spanked by a 1.3 !!!!"

XDEEDUBBX 12-28-2005 03:23 PM

street racing is for idiots...im not gonna lie, i've done it hundreds of times but i quit while i was ahead. not worth it at all, it proves nothing and puts other lives in danger..just imagine if your wife or mother was driving on the road they were racing on and was part of a fatal car crash..could you live with yourself then?

dmorales 12-28-2005 03:29 PM

I have friends talk about my car a lot. I don't get challenged much, I try to stay on the offensive and do the challenging! :) I'm not dissapointed too often especially on the highway rolling in 3rd.. (the magic gear)

One of my friends seems to think his stock sentra spec-v has got something. To those people I just laugh. and when they won't shut up I tell up them to put some money up and we'll go.

Just ignore them. Real races are timed. Street race are stupid and pointless. Straighline drags is just soooo damn boring. Where is the sportscar in straightline driving. I know most people don't have the "feel" in driving a car fast around bends. These are the same people who will drag you on the straights. They pick on us coz we have a measly 1.3 litre engine.

I got picked on once with 2 of my friends just before Christmas. Both came up with this question: (Probably the same as a challenge to drag... but done with words) 1 has a 350z the other a Subaru GT Liberty/Legacy.

"How does your RX8 manage to get up a hill?"

My reply: "I have the first 3 gears that will give me good wheel torque in my engine's powerband."

 was my reaction. They have no clue what wheel torque is or what low gearing does. They were even more shocked my car only makes 211Nm of torque.

Most people under estimate an RX8.

shadyaustin77 12-28-2005 03:35 PM

lol, its a an 8 man, expect to get this kind of stuff... the car looks like it should go 300 mph ^^

That's what I always do about it. My car makes me grin like an idiot anyway so I just turn it their way and ignore them.

Yeah, I did that in my Mustang a few times, but haven't had the pleasure in my RX-8 yet. In your case Big_Mike I would suggest you pull away extra slow so it is clear to everyone (especially any patol cars you may or may not have seen first) that you are not participating in a street race. Especially note the following:

+1 to you BlueFrenzy for living the dream. ;)

Budweiser8Jr 12-29-2005 09:51 AM

Yep. I've had the car since Monday, had 3 challenges already.

Mid 80s Berlinetta (Cheap Camaro)
Cavalier
Chevrolet Cobalt

Needless to say, I never even turned my head, they weren't worth my time. Also noticed alot of head turning when it comes to my car now, HOT women that want nothing to do with my ugly butt now stare...kinda cool.

Ok......that's just ridiculous. Are you sure you don't have a "race me" sticker on the back of your 8 and not know it?

Big_Mike_4488 12-29-2005 11:34 AM

I didnt race him at the light, I wonder if he talked about me in the Izuzu Rodeo's Kills Forum

I wouldn't have expected you too. That would have been a waste of gas :)

Roaddemon 12-29-2005 02:33 PM

I always feel the fool after street racing. Does'nt matter who wins. You could kill someone doing it. Not worth it. It's an irresponsible act. I also value my driver's license and low insurance rates.

CaptDharma 12-29-2005 05:32 PM

It seems that I get more crotch rockets wanting to match up on the highways..I just dont understand it..Like I am going to weave in and out of traffic? You know he will.
Thanks but no thanks. Bad Kharma is right......Ignore them.

They are posing. They noticed you, now they want you to notice them. The 8 has a significant presence on the road.

yiksing 12-29-2005 11:08 PM

Piss them off by increasing speed or slowing down (slowly), since we can rev to 9k they will hav to be shifting up or down all the time just to follow you. They will get tired of it

I guess that works best maybe if you're in 4th or maybe 3rd? Also a lot of these punks drive automatics and well I also must admit the only time I ever found myself doing stupid stuff aka street racing was when I was back from work cross-state in a rental. Not sure I'd ever do it in the 8. Makes it even worse when you do it in a car you don't know though.

One word. JEALOUSY

Vertigo-1 12-30-2005 05:43 AM

Once, when I was heading up to my favorite twisty area, I had a yellow Lancer OZ Rally come up behind me and start seriously tailgating me. Now being the area was twisty and the road isn't exactly all that wide, I went through it at my normal pace and speed, which is generally no more than 50 mph. The idiot behind me probably wanted to do 60+, and since I wasn't pushing it, he kept up with me rather easily. But what really threw me a bone was after we got through the twisty sections and got into a straight, HE GOES AND PASSES ME! Over a double yellow line on a narrow road! At that point I knew that this was a serious punk behind me and that I wanted no part of such idiocy, so I let him do his thing. I'm sure he had fun bragging about his kill at the Lancer forums.

What's funny though is not too long later, I saw him again around town...and the entire right side of his car was severely scraped up. Looked exactly as though he had taken a curve entirely too fast and ran his car up against a guard rail. Can't say he didn't have that coming, that's for sure.

That driver definitely had speed and slight abilities... however, really lacked "TALENT"!

Fools like him deserves all those scrape marks. That mistake is definitely a learning experience for him.

Perhaps next time, consider this... put your hazard lights on, pull to the side and slow down for him to safely pass you. Then from behind just keep up with him and observe how that particular car handles around those twisties. It's good to know where you stand or how well your RX8 benchmarks with different cars. At least you can see where his strenghts and weaknesses are (driver and car). It's just me. You'll definitely pick out the good drivers out there. I find it amusing. You also give him the impression you are courteous or just weak! :hahano:

Better safe than sorry. Afterall RX8s have great brakes.

Umbra 12-30-2005 09:17 AM

The best thing is to rev your engine and make them think that you are going to race and then drive away slowly from the lights while they squeel and race away. It makes them look like idiots.

Or sometime what I do, is to drive even slower (making sure they don't rear end you!)....that would piss them off even more... :) In fact, you can probably see them cursing at your from your rear mirror...

WOW!!! Some of you sound like Kia Rio owners getting bullied at every stop light. You have a sports car....act like it!!! I am not saying that you have to race someone for pinks or anything....but a little 0-60 competition between lights is hardly dangerous.

I love all the people that say to 'take it to the track'. I for one purchased my car for driving on the street...not at the track. I have been very happy with my straight-line performance and usually entertain any worthy match-ups at the stop lights. I am in no way a dangerous street racer that needs to be flamed here in this thread....so don't bother. I just like to DRIVE the SPORTS CAR I purchased. Some of you sound like that is evil or something.

Naw, It depends on the driver. I have alittle fun too at stoplights but we can't talk about our accomplishments here. kill is a 4 letter word on this forum.
