Where to drive 150mph??

I recently bought an RX-8, and at least ONCE I'd like to experience driving the car to its full capability...including top speed.

Are there tracks and/or sports car clubs where you can go to do that? Not really interested in trying 100+ on a public highway.

Thanks,
saxon

In Ohio they have a huge oval for testing. Car & Driver used to use it for HI-Speed car runs.
Rent Daytona or Talladaga. You may have a problem doing that as an indevidual without any connection to a racing licence.

About 4 hours away, I have driven 5 1/2 to get to a nice track.

or you can drive to North Dakota, or wherever where the legal speed limit is 'reasonable and proper'

a lot of exotic car owners drive to those middle-of-nothing states just so they can 'stretch the legs' of their supercars

That wouldn't fit his requirements.

but yea i think if he wants to do top speed test off-road it'll have to involve some sort of oval track... all the road circuits i've been to don't have straightaways long enough for acceleration to 150...

Even Road America, which I have driven, I don't think would allow you to get above 140 mph. I raced there in a RX7, I haven't driven it in the 8.

i have done it... illegally like an idiot, on some straight country road. it is a little scary once you get up there. the car gets really light and you have to have ur full attention. 1 time was enough for me.

Once I get better I think I could hit 145 on Pocono. I run with PDA and one day out of the year they do Pocono set up like it is in the photo. If I can get through the North infield fast you don't have to hit your brakes till the tunnel turn at the top.

Dido, very early in the morn WAAAAYYYY up in Maine, could see for miles(doesn't make it right) But I'd bet there wasn't a human for 50 miles. I was already going a buck figured hey just once. But yeah seemed very light and was kinda a white knuckle journey.........once and only once thats for sure...it was VERY dumb but hindsight is 20/20.

careful with what you say here, Mazda has been known to visit this site and void warranties of ppl who say they have been driving at speeds over 100 miles.

My wife's car is a stripped down sport package 6 speed. I drive 100 miles all the time......just not in an hour

BTW...to those thinking in terms of Montana, etc...I just checked the other day, and they have speed limits out there now. The fastest legal speed in the US now is 75...on some roads in Texas.

Another story about Montana:

About 8 years ago...I was driving on one of those "reasonable and prudent" roads. It looked good for high speed...at first glance. So I am crusing along at 90 or so...and all of a sudden I see a lazy boy chair sitting right in the middle of the road!!!

Glad I wasn't doing 150 on THAT road that day.

Track makes much more sense. I'd like to see what my car can do...but I don't have a death wish.

Michigan International Speedway should be less than four hours from you. With Google or an email to the track you can find out what clubs run there.
