What a wonderful Car
Hey guys,
It's been quite some time since I've made a post on this forum, but I've stuck around reading all yours all throughout the years. In 2004 I bought a brand new Velocity Red Grand Touring 6SPD, and loved it on an indescribable level. In late 2007 I sold the car, wanting to try something new, because the warranty was ending , and because it had quite a few miles. I've often regretted that decision very much, namely any time I see an 8, or pass a Mazda dealership. Since the RX-8, I've had a 2006 Corvette Coupe, a 2007 Subaru Impreza Wrx STi, 2005 Mercedes SLK-350, 2009 Audi TT, 2008 VW GTI, and others (some of those were family members cars, not all mine ).
Of all those cars, none of them have the feel, the connection, the amazing balance, and every day driving bliss of the RX-8. None of them. The Sti comes the closest, but still, it's can't touch the rx-8. All of my friends think I'm crazy. Perhaps I am. But for all of these years I've been raving about the RX-8, going so far as to proclaim it's superiority over my Corvette (the corvette forum did not respond well, heh).
Well, after trying out everything I can think of, I want back in. I've just come to accept the fact that I will never find another car that made me feel as good as my RX-8. Today I had the supreme pleasure of an extended drive in a 2010 r3. Utterly brilliant is all I can say. It's everything I remember, and more. I took an entrance ramp at extra legal speed, and, even with all the suspension mods I've done to the Sti, it's no-where's near as composed and communicative as the R3 was on that same ramp.
As I've been telling my friends and family for so many years, the RX-8 is not concerned with raw straight line performance. And it's all the better for that. With my Vette, I had to scare the **** out myself to hit 50% of it's potential. 100% was out of the question. This translated to most of the time, during my daily drive, being in a numb, isolated vehicle. I was as bored as my vette while driving it at legal speeds.
The joy of running the RX-8 to 9,000 RPM is unsurpassed by anything else and I mean that. The best part is I don't have be going a zillion miles an hour to have a great time ringing the RX-8 out, although I can if I want to. The communication that was coming through the steering wheel, the complete lack of body roll, the incredible, linkage free shifter, the engine where god intended it to be. I almost cried. I love this car more than my words can ever attempt to express. And after these years of driving a slew of much more expensive, much faster, and to some much "better" toys I wanted to let all of you know that I'm coming back. Indeed, that 2010 Blue R3 will soon be mine and this time I'm keeping it till the wheels fall off.
I'm very thankful that you guys are still out here, defenders and supporters of the RX-8, for only you guys understand just how brilliant it is. After all this time, I'm back and that says a lot about this car. Nothing feels as good, is as controllable, and is as rewarding, especially in the day to day slog, as the RX-8. You think of it, I've probably driven it, and I can say firsthand that nothing for me beats that little rotary and that perfect platform.
So, sorry for making you guys read all of that, but I just had to profess my love and excitment to the only group of people who wont think I'm crazy for selling one of my cars (either the GTI or STi) and "downgrading" (yeah right!) to an R3 RX-8. My friends will all say I'm crazy, my family will simply roll their eyes, but I know you guys understand. Once you go RX-8, you never go back.
WHAT A WONDERFUL CAR!!!!
Sorry for making you guys read all that, just couldn't help myself.

Nice post. You can get a faster car than the 8, but it's hard to get a better car. It's just so fun and feels so right. Anyone can make a fast car, but it's a lot harder to make a car that feels like the 8.

Ive driven many cars as well and agree, with the exception of my brothers BoxsterS nothing communicates or feels as well and the 8 is easier to place and swing the tail out, that said his boxster has longer notchier shift throws and a heavier clutch with engagement way too high in the pedal travel for me. Plus its crazy money and only seats 2.

Thank you! yeah Ive taken much **** from the 1G Talon community for molesting my tails. Prob is I gave the stockers to my son who just picked up a 91 and one of the tails was cracked and wouldnt pass insp. The new paint was hard to get by the wife until one day in 2004 a deer ran out and mashed my hood/headlights, funny bumper and both fenders were untouched.

Good story and welcome back.
So true about the Vette. I use to own a 07 Yamaha R1-the power was incredible. But you could use it wot for such a short period. It was extremely boring to ride at the speed limit. Superbikes are incredible, but to ride 1010ths is asking for trouble.
I use to own a 08 Mazda MX5, which was not fast. But it was really fun to drive because it handled really well and you could nail the throttle and not be only the limits so quickly.
Anyhow, post some pics of your r3, when you get it.

Momentum Keeps Me Going
May '04 and 24 posts!? All those missed opportunities to express yourself here I'm sure we would have enjoyed hearing about. You put your feelings on cars into words well and given the variety of cars you know, you have valuable insight many other don't. Welcome back to both yourself and your new R3

So basically you werent good enough of a driver to get the most out a vette and decided to try to get the most out of something thats far below the performance envelope of a vette.
that is a big FAIL in my eyes. When i worked for infiniti i literally drove G35s and near the end G37s and i got everything out of them and then some. I could make those cars do anything i wanted. But instead of using my money to buy a G35 i bought something a bit harder to master hence my current GTO which i have yet not mastered. I would never consider downgrading because my car scared me, hell thats why i bought it.

I hope you're "mastering" the capabilities of that GTO on a closed track, as to do so on the streets would be insane. I also owned a C6 Vette, and for 98% of the driving that I do, the comment about it being boring for both me and the car was spot on. If I had more access to a track environment, it would be a different story. But, alas, we must all live in the real world...

I could not have put it into better words! I have also had a good amount of sports cars, corvette, 3000gt, mustang, etc and none of them compare to the 8. DriftGTO, we get it! You are a driving god and we should all feel blessed that you grace us with your stupid drivel. You realize your on an RX8 forum right, I mean even a american muscle only moron would not be aware of that. Your an ***, maybe you hang out here because the GTO guys can't stand you either? Maybe you should let your friend post on here and you can go back to your tiny world.

Actually I did exactly the opposite; I sold my C6 to buy the RX-8. Half the price, and the ability to use more of its capabilities in most street driving situations was important to me. I'm sure others would have a different view. No car is always better than any other car; it all depends on what the particular driver wants.

To everyone else, thanks again for the nice words! One of the great things about getting back into an 8 is the community. RX-8 meets always had the nicest group of guys and girls vs. a lot of the other events I’ve been to in my other cars. Of all the forums I'm apart of, I would say this has got to be one of the best groups of people on the internet. So, last night I could barely fall asleep, such is my level of excitement at getting back into an 8. Hopefully within the month I’ll be able to get my R3 (got to sell something first!).
On another note...
DRFTGTO, okay, so you feel that, contrary to what I was trying to express, my choice to go back to an RX-8 is somehow reflective of my driving skill. The only thing I have to say is this: What was the point of sharing that? I’ve been out of the RX-8 world for a number of years, am expressing my excitement about getting back in, putting up a positive post on the forum, and, for no reason whatsoever, you decided to post up irrelevant, unintelligent, negative, belligerent and unnecessary dribble. I hope that was a nice ego boost for you, but please, this is a feel good post, so take your BS elsewhere, namely off this forum.
Anyway, nice to be back where I belong, and thanks again for the responses everyone!

I have to agree about the vette, my brother had a C5 Z06 and is a capable roadcourse driver having taken lessons in various cars in various states around the country. He traded it for a BoxsterS, besides the playskool interior it rode like **** on public roads was as long as a cabin cruiser and too damn wide to park in normal parking spaces without getting door dinged constantly. Ive driven it quite a bit and it wasnt as connected to the driver and the pavement as an 8 imo either.

To summarize, DRFTGTO:
