I don't know to much about audio, but you could find out more info in the Interior, Audio, and Electronics forum section.

I had 2 tens in my pickup, and it sounded decent. Then i unhooked one (custom seperate boxes built by me) from the amp, and it sounds a lot better now. I say this because just because you think more is better, or bigger is better, not the always the case.

If and When i put a system in my 8, ill probably just go with one 10. I was recently considering ways i could possibly make a custom setup with a sub in that "accessory space" that flips down between the rear seats. As far as brands as the haze said JL is always good, iv seen good things with alpine too, also kicker, and Rockford is what i like. Possibly what you could do is check out a used (not abused) system on craigslist, pick up one for say 300-400, depending on what it comes with you could pick up some extras for it within your budget, maybe cap, maybe upgraded battery, ect.

I always went with 12's but I was looking to pick up some deeper bass. There are some really nice 10's out there though and if you get a good enough one then it doesn't really matter about that little deeper bass the 12 can do.

I have two rockford svc p2's in my last car and never fully powered them I probably had 200-250 watts going into them together and that was plenty of bass for me and still was not at their max rms wattage. There was even a crack in the cone of one of my subs from dropping a screwdriver on it and in the few years I had them the crack never opened so they are actually pretty good quality subs.

The main problem with buying used stuff is not knowing how they were treated by the previous owner. I have bought both my sets used but only after really giving them a good test at the place I was buying them at. Most places(pawn shops, used electronic stores, whatever) likely wont let you return that type of stuff because of the chances you messed it up trying to install it or put to much power through them so test them to death before you buy. If they say you cant test then obviously just walk away.
