What to look for in an RX-8

I used to own a 2004 RX-8 GT. I loved the car but at the time I was low on cash and had to sell it before I could really use it to its full potential. I am now interested in getting another one. I have heard that mazda has changed some things with it and that a 2006 would be better. I really don't know a lot about the 8 but im interested in learning. the question now is what to look for when buying a new 8. what model year would be the best for a price below $20000? is there any way to see if the car had its oil changes on time? see if the engine was ever flooded? If I was to buy a new 8 and tune it + performance upgrades what would be a reasonable number as far as horsepower goes.

Thank you, I wasn't aware that I was able to search like that, it has turned up a lot of great results. I am hoping that my new 8 will not treat me like my old one did and I think that if i maintain it right all should be good. No fire
