what is this light indicator mean??

hey all, sorry for a question that i could easily find in my manual, but i lost my manual!!

this indicator is orange, shaped kinda like a raindrop except the bottom is straight and jaggedy across, and it has an exclamation mark right in the middle of it. it's located right next to the gas indicator. my car beeped at me 3 times and displayed this. has been intermittent for the last couple days.

please tell me what this is so i can take the appropriate action! thx!

tpms- your tires need air

RotoRocket 01-09-2006 12:50 PM

Edit - Zoom beat me to it. You're fast Zoom!

It's your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning you that your tire pressure is not correct.

It's probably close, but when you get your tires warmed up after the first initial miles, they are probably reading higher, and triggering your TPMS.

Here you go:

I just noticed that whoever has the above car (in the photo), does not have Dynamic Stability Control.

Green arrow below the TPMS..is that a shift light?????

StewC625 01-09-2006 01:31 PM

Note:

In colder weather, your tires lose pressure relative to the pressure in warmer weather - i.e. the same tire at 32 PSI at 70 degrees will read about 23 to 26 PSI at 20 degrees.

Bottom line, you have a tire or more that needs some attention - go check your tire pressures when they are cold (no more driving than 1 mile after having cooled several hours since the last drive), and correct to 32 PSI while still cold.

That will solve the issue.

I Think The Shift Lite Is For Automatics

Yeah...I've never seen that on an RX-8 dash before, although I can't say I've looked for it. Is this a photo of a pre-production instrument cluster??

Nope....check the indicated redline.

RotoRocket 01-09-2006 01:42 PM

I found the photo on another thread here.

Maybe it is pre-production...

Indicated redline, not RPM... :)

Isn't a shift light the caps lock light on your keyboard? Maybe that '8 has the optional keyboard attached, for entering stuff into the Satnav?

Which country did the poster come from?? I'm starting to think this cluster is region specific.

I found another odd cluster with this light......my door open/seat belt indicators ain't up there either.

iKenndac 01-09-2006 02:39 PM

The cluster is definitely regional - my 8's cluster is the other way round - the fuel gauge and temp. gauge is on the right, and the oil pressure and trip is on the left. I'm pretty certain I hae seatbelt and door open lights, too. No shift light, though.

I know bugger all about automatics....never seen one, no-one in Australia buys them. However, I know they have a 7500rpm redline and the pics posted in this thread show an 8500 red band and a 9000rpm redline.

These clusters are from a manual RX-8.

iKenndac 01-09-2006 03:23 PM

Maybe it's a visual version of the red band 'beeeeep' you hear when up at 8500rpm?

Makes sense... an up arrow for upshifting, green to let you know it's the right time to shift, etc.

Yeah.....for which market?? This is a LHD cluster.....so it ain't Japanese.

iKenndac 01-09-2006 03:29 PM

Not sure - maybe a track version of the 8, or a feature that was pulled right at the last second (i.e., it was too distracting)?

Maybe your mates over the channel have it?

deamicls 01-09-2006 03:44 PM

You guys are all wrong. I think that it's the "low gas" light. You can see the gas gauge almost pointing to E.
