what is this light indicator mean??

hey all, sorry for a question that i could easily find in my manual, but i lost my manual!!

this indicator is orange, shaped kinda like a raindrop except the bottom is straight and jaggedy across, and it has an exclamation mark right in the middle of it. it's located right next to the gas indicator. my car beeped at me 3 times and displayed this. has been intermittent for the last couple days.

please tell me what this is so i can take the appropriate action! thx!

tpms- your tires need air

RotoRocket 01-09-2006 12:50 PM

Edit - Zoom beat me to it. You're fast Zoom!

It's your tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) warning you that your tire pressure is not correct.

It's probably close, but when you get your tires warmed up after the first initial miles, they are probably reading higher, and triggering your TPMS.

Here you go:

I just noticed that whoever has the above car (in the photo), does not have Dynamic Stability Control.

djseto 01-09-2006 01:30 PM

Green arrow below the TPMS..is that a shift light?????

StewC625 01-09-2006 01:31 PM

Note:

In colder weather, your tires lose pressure relative to the pressure in warmer weather - i.e. the same tire at 32 PSI at 70 degrees will read about 23 to 26 PSI at 20 degrees.

Bottom line, you have a tire or more that needs some attention - go check your tire pressures when they are cold (no more driving than 1 mile after having cooled several hours since the last drive), and correct to 32 PSI while still cold.

That will solve the issue.

I Think The Shift Lite Is For Automatics

Yeah...I've never seen that on an RX-8 dash before, although I can't say I've looked for it. Is this a photo of a pre-production instrument cluster??

Nope....check the indicated redline.

I found the photo on another thread here.

Maybe it is pre-production...

Indicated redline, not RPM... :)

iKenndac 01-09-2006 02:02 PM

Isn't a shift light the caps lock light on your keyboard? Maybe that '8 has the optional keyboard attached, for entering stuff into the Satnav?

Which country did the poster come from?? I'm starting to think this cluster is region specific.

Gomez 01-09-2006 02:26 PM

I found another odd cluster with this light......my door open/seat belt indicators ain't up there either.

https://www.rx8club.com/attachment.p...chmentid=67451

iKenndac 01-09-2006 02:39 PM

The cluster is definitely regional - my 8's cluster is the other way round - the fuel gauge and temp. gauge is on the right, and the oil pressure and trip is on the left. I'm pretty certain I hae seatbelt and door open lights, too. No shift light, though.

blue flash 01-09-2006 02:51 PM

i thought when i test drove an automatic it had the shift lifts.99%sure

I know bugger all about automatics....never seen one, no-one in Australia buys them. However, I know they have a 7500rpm redline and the pics posted in this thread show an 8500 red band and a 9000rpm redline.

These clusters are from a manual RX-8.

iKenndac 01-09-2006 03:23 PM

Maybe it's a visual version of the red band 'beeeeep' you hear when up at 8500rpm?

Makes sense... an up arrow for upshifting, green to let you know it's the right time to shift, etc.

Gomez 01-09-2006 03:26 PM

Yeah.....for which market?? This is a LHD cluster.....so it ain't Japanese.

iKenndac 01-09-2006 03:29 PM

Not sure - maybe a track version of the 8, or a feature that was pulled right at the last second (i.e., it was too distracting)?

Gomez 01-09-2006 03:35 PM

Maybe your mates over the channel have it?

deamicls 01-09-2006 03:44 PM

You guys are all wrong. I think that it's the "low gas" light. You can see the gas gauge almost pointing to E.

cleoent 01-09-2006 03:47 PM

yeah cool shift light. I dont have one of those :(

my10ae 01-09-2006 03:51 PM

The 4 speed AT does not have a shift light. Not sure what country this cluster this from?

Uh..no. The low gas light is the yellow light near the "E" in the previous picture. The green one definitely says Shift

oooh. I was looking at the yellow dot. I see what you guys are talking about now. I have a shift light in my jeep wrangler. The most useless thing in the car. It will tell you to shift at 2k rpm and while you speed up from there will turn off. I'm glad that they didn't include it.

Hmm interesting so on the oil light.

I had the recall done but they didn't replace the oil pan, instead they "reprogrammed" it.

However I haven't notice the oil light lighting up when the key is inserted etc.

Wonder if they just disabled it....Hmmmmmm

Thanks

Aratinga 01-09-2006 08:21 PM

You'll get a TPMS light if tires are OVERinflated as well as underinflated. When I picked my 8 up at the dealer the day I bought her, the light came on as I was driving home (110 degree July day) and I pulled out the manual to figure out what that weird ( ! ) meant as soon as I parked in my garage. I checked my tire pressures and they were all over 70psi!

One of the things dealers are supposed to do during that 100 point new car inspection is deflate the tires, since they're all pumped up to maximum pressure to prevent them from flat-spotting on the long boatride over here from Japan. Needless to say, many dealers don't bother doing this.

Well done. This image is from a pre-production car after all. I suspect the image I posted earlier is pre-prod too, I got it off an American website.

LOL no not by running out of oil, but next time I get in will turn the car on and see it lights up with all the other lights.

Gomez 01-09-2006 10:04 PM

There is another way.

zaglo6204 01-09-2006 10:13 PM

tell me tell me tell me!!!!
this is soooo suspenseful!!!

Gomez 01-09-2006 10:28 PM

I wouldn't be a shifty bastard if there wasn't some suspense.....

Gomez 01-09-2006 10:35 PM

Seven minutes is up...I'm a weak, soft touch shifty bastard...

Ok....here's the deal.

Key off.....hold the odometer reset button.....key to ignition....wait.....cluster goes into test mode. Press odo reset button to step through the instrument cluster test. Some tests test the gauges, another tests the rev beeper, one of them tests the cluster indicators.

All good clean fun. Key off to exit test mode.

Cheers,
Gomez.

Ooooo, purty. Does anyone else find it interesting that the rev needle goes miles past 10k revs (I'd say to about where 12-13k would be)?

Woot! Thanks for the 'easter egg of the week' Gomez. Gotta go try that now.

fray 01-10-2006 05:52 PM

You can compare the picture of the cluster in one of the previous messages with my cluster:

http://gate.crashing.org/~fray/RX-8/...s/Image10.html

There is no (obvious) shift indicator, and the door/seat-belt lights have moved.

i've seen mine go almost to the digital speedomter.. and it wasn't in test mode... it involved 2nd gear at 100 mph..... that the only thing that happened too.

short answer- check with a guage

long answer-
is it a colder morning than you have had recently when the light comes on? did you park outside when you normally park in your garage? was the last time you checked your tires in the summer and now its winter? then they are under filled.

unless you just purchased the car at the dealer and it came from the truck the day before than you probably have over filled tires.

if its summer and the last time you put air in it was winter or its hotter than normal or you just purchased the car at the dealer and it came from the truck the day before than you probably have over filled tires.

unless there is a nail in your tire - then they are probably under inflated

NgoRX8 01-10-2006 07:43 PM

I'd say they are underinflated. My car's tire pressure was less the night I got it.

DOMINION 01-10-2006 09:45 PM

OK thanks zoom44 an NgoRX8, I do think my tires are underindlated.
