My dealership sold a nordic green automatic last week, and today it came in on a rollback. The kid was 17. He somehow managed to jump a guardrail and take it down an enbankment. The whole front end is off the car, and it still has the temp tag on it.

 

Accidents happen.

 

Maybe there should be an age requirement to drive an RX-8

 

I was at a dealership yesterday and they were commenting on the large number of RX8s coming back wrecked. It just may be too much car for some.

 

Well, you've got to admit, this car makes you feel 100% secure most of the time - maybe, for a younger driver, by the time the RX8 lets you know you're in trouble....

Also, in other threads, it's been noted how many IDIOTS seem to want to challenge you and make agressive moves on you - I'm a way over 25 year old female, and some of these crazies do this to ME. I can only imagine what may happen when one of these guys looks over and sees a "young" driver in the left hand seat.

 

Had a Dodge Ram trying to race me on the interstate on the way in the morning, when I sped up to pass him, he sped up. He almost hit another car trying to show his a__. I just decided it was safer to move on ahead. So I left him.......

 

Im 17 and I have been challenged many times by people my age. To keep my pride (as another user on this forum suggested) I roll down my window and tell them I dont race for anything under 1500 bucks, you should see the looks on the faces of those people... And I am 17, and I am not stupid (as far as I know) when it comes to this area... I think most kids my age cant drive. But I also think that if we raise the driving age, no one can get experience... Its a loose/loose situation...

yeah, there are a lot of young idiots driving fast cars. but come on... there's way too much hate for young drivers.

 

i was on a highway and there is a gradual curve about 1/4 mile long and i started passing all the cars in my 8. well this 1 guy who had already passed me didnt like that so he gets on my tail and comes dangerously close. i mean if i had to even tap my brakes he probably would have run into me. so i just stayed in the left lane and he finally passed me in his escort.

haha hey i resent that 17 comment... I'm 18 and drive our rx-8 all the time and havent even come to close to wrecking it. Yeah people try and race, but theres nothing to prove cause the rx-8 will alwasy be sexier than any other car

Sorry people but what is a 17 year old doing with a $30,000 car? I don't care if he or she has a so-called job; more often than not some idiot parent is at least helping with the cost. Its a matter of numbers, very young and very old drivers account for most fatal accidents. The former generally don't have the maturity to drive sensibly, the latter the reflex response or information processing capability. If you get a car like this at 17 what do you get at 30 or 40, an F18?

 

I agree with you stickman... somewhat. When I was 16 or 17 (1997, I think), my grandmother passed away, leaving behind a 2 year old neon with 1,000 miles on it. My parents gave me the option to trade it in for another car within a certain price range. I chose the then semi-new, Pontiac Sunfire ($16,500 MSRP if I remember correctly). I still drive it today, along with my company vehicle.

I suppose my point is, my parents had a dollar limitation to what they were willing to spend and could afford, on a car and me at 17... and I chose what I thought was the "coolest" car in that range. If some parents have that supplemental income, where spending 30K is not an issue for thier 17 year old, then I can't disagree. Even though, 30K is going to be a huge deal for me at 24 making my first purchase on my own. I am a bit jealous, but I'm sure some kids were when they saw my new Sunfire.

At the same time, I do agree, when you hit that price range, your getting more glamour and power for your buck. Young drivers are more suspect to getting in trouble with thier peers driving a fancy car.

 

I'm 31. I have a bigger problem with the 13 year olds and the weedeater powered scooters than I do with 16 and 17 year olds in cars.

Ya'll shoud come to florida for a while. We have 90 year olds in $40K caddies that can't see over the wheel.

We also have invisible pink elephants.

They can only be seen by the elderly and tourists. Some women can see them but its hit or miss. The elephants sit in the middle of the road and the drivers have to swerve around them. To us it looks like a sudden lane change for no apparent reason but its the elephants.

The elephants also walk down the middle of the road or run across the road. suddenly. This causes those that can see them to stop suddenly or drive very slowly down the middle of two lanes.

I know it sounds crazy but ask anyone from Florida. The invisible pink elephants exist.

I'm 43. I learned to drive in my mom's '72 Camaro (350 v-8) when I was 15.

So, uh, you know where to get any F18's?

 

The day of my 16th birthday, I ran out and bought a 1972 Chevy Impala. I then drove it to the DMV to exchange my provisional licence (which, back then in Maryland, you acquire at 15 and 9 months in preparation) for the real thing.
It was 1982. It cost me $350, which seemed like a lot of money.
I miss that car...

 

HA HA HA Greese!! I can relate! I am from N. FL. and you are correct, there are pink elephants there too! The majority of the elephants seem to congregate in FL., though I have heard of a few people that claim to have seen them here in Tennessee (of course in TN it may just be that they have to spit their chewing tobacco). Maybe they are just following me?! *paranoia*

 

So that's what they saw when I lived there.:D

 

You know accidents happen to even experienced drivers. I agree a 17 year shouldn't be driving a 30,000 dollar car. I just wonder how many of these wrecks happened when it was icey or snowy on the road.

 

In the UK a 17 year old (youngest to get licence) wouldnt be able to get insurance unless they were stinking rich or lied.

Drivers that young here often lack the skills nessicary to deal with normal road driving, let alone high perfromance RWD cars.

 

Darwin was right. It's a normal occurance in everyday life. They weed themselves out.

People make bad decisions every day. All we can hope is one of their bad decisions doesn't effect me or my family.
