Then why does lexus use the RX name for their suvs? Do they use a wankle?

mazdabob 09-28-2006 01:54 AM

The first rotary Mazda brought to the U.S. was the R-100. When Mazda was designing the next car they called it the RX-2, Rotary eXperimental #2. The big shots liked that name, and decided to make it official. All of the following rotary cars were RX-3, 4, 5, 7, and 8. (5 was the Cosmo, and I don't think there was a 6.)

As far as the Lexus RX, many SUVs have an X in their name, X meaning 4X4 or X-country.

Nice job making all of that up :) And no, It NEVER meant Rotry Experiment, EVER. Mazda has flat out said this! They refuse to say what it ACTUALLY means, but they have since released the meaning of MX being Piston Sport. It is safe for one to assume that RX means ROTARY sport.

Edit: And yes, there was an RX-6. It was the (1978) Cosmo (RX-5), renamed, same body/engine etc, sold in markets other then the US.

SayNoToPistons 09-28-2006 06:55 PM

^ DOnt have to assume.. it was said by mazda themselve.

I didn't make this up. I bought my first Mazda in 1972, and have learned a lot about Mazda over the years. This is what I've learned from numerous sources.

AdRoCK3217 09-29-2006 03:18 PM

Ok, so you relayed information from OTHER people who made it up. Nice going :-D

"Psst, pass it on!"

'87 Turbo II 09-29-2006 04:17 PM

no there was no Rx-6 because the Japanese had probles saying "x" and "6" next to each other. The MX-6 was only called so in America.

no I'm not being funny, it's why they skipped 6 and went from Rx-5 to Rx-7. So really the Rx-8 is the Rx-7 and the Rx-7 is the Rx-6.

Your close, well done.

Plenty of B.S getting flung around here girls. Those that choose not to believe what I post below should learn what the word "research" means

Back in 1967. Mazda showed off the RX-85 at the Tokyo motor show. In 1968 the RX-85 changed to the production version Familia/R-100 series.

In 1968. Mazda showed of the RX-87 at the Tokyo motor show. In 1969, the RX-87 changed to the production version Luce/R-130 series

At the time, Mazda announced that the term RX = Rotary (eXperimental)

At the time, Mazda announced that the term R = Rotary (production)

In 1970, the R-612 was launched but just weeks after the Capella/R-612 series was released, an advertising guru got approval for a name change to RX-2. Thus, by the time exports of the RX-2 began, there was no further classification of the RX = this & R=that.

This is how things stood for the next 30+ years until.......................

Our Ford/Mazda exec decided to change things around with his version of RX Crossover of rotary sports or what ever it was......... :nono:

Since this time, confusion reigns

AdRoCK3217.............. Stop smoking drugs. Never was an RX-6. Although the first rwd 626 was to be the RX-6 but Mazda stopped development mid way through & it never saw the light of day.
