I usually shift around 3k to 4k when putting around town, but I have no problem letting it rip to redline when sport driving in the country. Also, I do occasionally "granny shift" (skipping a gear or two) after I'm up to highway speed and meshed in with traffic. One good romp on the loud pedal in 3rd gear to get up to speed and then straight to 6th gear. Too much fun!

I admire your strong interest in knowing how to drive this car properly. But you're right. That was a "really dumb comment." I hope you didn't pay him for a second lesson.

Shift below 4K during warm up
Shift between 3K and 5K in normal driving
Keep it over 5K when having fun..... which is almost every day.
Beep at least once every drive.

For the best acceleration you don't want to shift at anything less than 6000 RPMs. Anything below that and the RPMs will drop below 4000 after shifting and the S-DAIS will need to reopen again.
Thanks Vertigo, yes I have learned that the car is only truly responsive above 4K which is why I have settled into upshifting around 6500 for best "modestly brisk" acceleration without sucking obscene amounts of fuel. The 4K power point happens very smoothly as you say. I have driven my friends' Honda cars with V-Tec and found the "lurch" almost objectionable when it kicks in.

Even my relatively low-tech 2000 Miata (no V-V-T) had a very pronounced power surge right at 4000 RPM.

I still wonder about the manual and those who follow it, recommending upshifts at like 3K. I gotta think that is hard on the engine under heavy throttle, but I suppose that is how the EPA fuel consumption numbers were achieved.

I mostly try to listen to the engine, but that translates into shifting 3K to 4K when I'm being conservative and 6K to 8K when I'm having fun. I have to turn off the stereo sometimes though, that Bose auto volume thing works really well sometimes I don't even realize I'm up as high as I am.

if you notice i high lighted SAFE roads.i have never had a problem with the dsc /tc turned off while on dry pavement.how ever if you don't know the limits of your 8 then yes by all means leave it on.and with normal driving i will get about 3 more miles to the gallon with it turned off ,more on the interstate.

every time you make a swift move it will apply the brakes so slightly and that will cause you to use more gas .

Only had my 8 for a few weeks, but these easy-to-remember shift points seem to work well, for upshifting or downshifting, if you are just looking for a smooth sync:

1st: 0-20 mph

2nd: 20

3rd: 30

4th: 40

5th: 50

6th: 60 and up

you can "lug" any kind of engine by making it go up a hill that is too steep in a gear that is too low to provide enough power. you're dumping in a ton of gas, stressing the engine and getting nothing for it, let it get low enough and it'll start rattling, by that point you're REALLY asking for damage.

heavy acceleration below 3000 rpm is an oxymoron if you're in a high gear (in any car), it just won't do anything

I usually shift around 5k-6k all the time, redline at least once a day. I try to get beyond 6k as often as I can but traffic usually doesn't permit it.

FWIW, I did my own experiment with shifting at low RPMs to conserve gas and I found that the amount of gas I conserved (less than 1mpg for each tank) wasn't worth the effort of trying to granny shift. IMO, shift and drive like a bat out of hell and have fun!!

^this is the truth

edit: Even though I can get about good 2-3 more mpg per tank by granny shifting, it's just not worth it, especially with a car as fun as this one. Shifting at 5k and pulling away from a crowd of traffic makes me a little more comfortable while driving as well.

what is the shift - beep - shift - ... I have a MT, is this on an AT?

Just wondering 'cause mine has never done this.

I have driven a MT my whole life, so I don't really look at the tach I just drive by feel.

Now that the price of gas has fallen I get more fun to the $ now.

We hit a high of $1.35 per litre for premium and now it can be had for $0.85

This is on the MT. You drive until you redline and then it beeps, so you shift again and drive until it beeps, shift again...

I've driven MT my whole life (albeit short) too and I can't drive this car by feel. It begs to be pushed beyond the norm so I just keep pushed until I hear the beep, and then I shift.

When you hit the 3rd beep, you're doing 90. You must do a lot of freeway/highway driving.

I'm usually shifting at around 3k to 3.5k as of right now. However, that may just be because this is my first MT car and i'm just learning. Got it two days ago actually =) Incredibly easy vehicle to learn MT on too. I havn't had much free time in the past couple days to drive but tomorrow will be the first real day to go out and have some fun.
