35,000 miles, 0 major problems.

I had the center console replaced and a rear tailight for condensation. That's it.

If you care about quarter mile times 1. buy a mustang or charger when it comes out. or 2. put nitrous on your dodge Neon.

I'm begining to get insulted by GLI and rx8 in the same sentence. You can not compare a RWD car to a FWD car.

The steering on the 8 is precise, crisp, snappy, nimble.
The engine is responsive, smooth, a joy for the ear.
The brakes and stopping power are silly, frightening, breath taking.

During my test drive my wife hit 115, by accident, in 4th gear. Floor first gear on a turn and things get real lively.

You decide...

I have had my automatic RX 8 for almost 3 years now......as expected there are always issues and bugs to be worked out in a first year car. I would go for a newer RX 8 since most of the issues will have been worked out. I have had a few but nothing major. The rotary engine has some quirks and it takes a particular buyer for this type of vehicle...if you love the car and don't mind checking the oil every 1000 miles or so, making sure it warms up before shutting it down(which is rare that this happens) and a few trips for here and there to the dealers for updates etc. than go for it. My gas mileage is at 19mpg the last 4 fill ups with 39,000 miles on her. For most of the time I was at 17.5 mpg. Not too bad.....remember it's a performance vehicle! The handling surpasses many other sports cars out there and the fit and finish are unmatched. This car gets stares constantly! I still revel in how beautiful it is in and out! Mazda has always been good about making things right in my mind. I always was taken care of and always got a free rental car when it was in the shop....never for very long. I will be getting the recall letter soon......she sometimes idles slightly rough, sometimes hesitates and that's about it. The auto could use more power but she's still fun to drive! Good luck to you. Aren't you gonna take a hit on your GLI though????

What am I getting myself into with an RX-8?? are there major maintenance issues, will I need to rebuild the engine like on the rx-7s?? Has anyone not had any problems with their car, because it seems like there are a lot of posts of problems. Also, if you had to do it again, would you still buy an RX-8??

I had a lady at the dealership I went to for the test drive tell me to stay away from the RX-8 and that she had one and it was a terrible buy, but I just love everything about the car.

Thanks for your time guys,

Chris
Well, probably the "lady" at the dealership doesn't even know what a rotary engine is..... of course it will be her worst buy....

I think I have a buyer lined up for the GLI and should get a decent price for it, that being said I have seen used rx8's advertised for 20-21 and I am sure I can get them cheaper than that. But if I can get a new one for the right price, I might still go that way too, I just started a job and the paychecks are quite nice. Does Mazda ever offer any deals for buyers... like 0% or anything like that?

Hi Chris, I am female and a first time buyer. I know little about any automobile, and what I chose to buy I had to be able to rely on. I traded in an 05 GT Mustang because they had to replace the rear end chunk at 20K, and I was not hard on it. I drove a Supra before and new how to put the Stang through her paces, and that I did. I can tell you quite simply this. I got 23,800 for my car,(they paid it off) and drove the rx8 06 shinka package off the lot with nothing down, and they run about 33K i think. Not even a month later they came out with the rumors about the engine recall, and I was realllly second guessing myself. THis is what Mazda told me. the spt Auto Trans" have been all that they have seen. There has not been ONE MT 8 come in, at least not an 06. If you love the car, buy it, but buy a Manual Trans.... Every one has its quirks, and those you have to deal with, or if you are lucky you dont. Read the manual, follow the maintaince schedule and warm up routines and check your oil, every 1000 miles.........and dont be afraid to ask questions of your dealer. Knowledge is power my friend.and peace of mind... a phone call is free, and most of the time you can get your questions answered. I have never enjoyed a car as much as my 8. I guess most importantly as a female though is what ever comes around I have to deal with because hubby is out of the country 11 months outta the year, and I feel safe. Take another spin, tell the salesperson, preferably a different one that you want to take it out where you can open it up a little, and get the feel of it. If they wont let you..............then go somewhere else....preferably to another mazda dealer. The rx8 has the smoothest ride, shift pattern, and it handles in curves like nothing I've ever driven, and very nice interior for the price. I've had no squeaks rattles nothing, and in two months have put 5000 miles on it, and thats just piddling around town. I simply cant get enough. If I miss anything, its the rumble of the V8 when she cranked up, or when i came in late, but I know my neighbors dont. I have seen very few where I live and that worried me at first, but I realised that it was only because I hadnt looked hard enough, but they are everywhere..... You will find more positive output than negative the more you read..invest the time and you will fall in love , just like we have, quirks and all.

hope this helps,

Laura

I am selling mine for $18,500 including winter tires so there are decent buys to be had out there! Loaded GT...just does not have the navi. Buyers market right now so if you can get one before the spring you may get a better price. Cool hope you sell yout GLI yourself. I get a bunch of scam emails...so watch out. So far I have had my car for sale 2 months and only one person has come out to test drive it....his parents I think put a nix on it for the young guy. He loved it. Good luck to you.

Don't take this as me getting defensive about the 8. Obviously you like it too, or you wouldn't be on this forum. I'm just curious why people keep drawing attention to it's accelleration as if it's a problem.
