what is acceptable engine life for you?
This isn't just confined to the 8 but any car you would buy. ( keeping in the same price range/ caliber, of the 8. )
Iv'e been told 100k is all that the car makers shoot for.
I expect 150k +

100K was what to shoot for in the 90s. I wouldn't be happy with anything under 150K. My 87 Supra Turbo ran for over 170K before the turbo blew an oil. It seized and threw a rod.

After my '89 n/a RX-7 hit over 250k miles w/ little to no maintenance and after witnessing 2 of my parents Mazda 626's approach 300k ('89 2.2 I4? which an overheating caused a blown gasket) and 200k ('95 w/ Mazda I4 which was curshed by a pine tree), I would expect well over 200k for any Japanese engine at least.

I have grown to expect 200k miles or more with basic maintanence only, being as I've had 5 vehicles go over that. Out of all the cars I have purchased the past 5 years, the S2000 is the only car I that I would feel confident that it's capable of that.
It's too bad I don't drive that car enough, and time wears down a vehicle just as much as miles, so I don't expect my S2000 to reach that trouble free. It will take too long, if in fact I decide to keep it the rest of my life.
My Speed 6, no way in my opinion will that car go 200k miles with just basic maintanence. Just my opinion. My RX8 certainly didn't that's why I got rid of it.
The STI had a real shot, because that car is built so solidly, but even that's a toss up. You just never know.
All in all, the rule applies. The more you drive it, the more reliable and durable it will be. Time ages a car just as much as miles. Take an RX8, and drive it 20k a year for 10 years, there's a good chance you'll get 200k out of it if you maintein it properly. Try doing 10k a year, drive it for 20 years, and I bet you won't have the same result. Just my .02

at least 170k, preferentially 200k.
my family has had several 170k+ cars before they were sold. my first car had 170k when i sold it. i got it at 145k. my moms old volvo (she loved that thing) had 250k before she sold it.
i fully expect my car to run to 170k. 100k if i go FI would be acceptable to me.

Honestly after everything I've seen from the Japanese market, I'd say at least
150k.
My mom worked for a guy when I was in high school that had a 88 I think CRX. He put two engines in it after the factory installed one. Initially he had about 250k on that first engine, second was around 400k, third he got close to 500k. Body naturally held, I think he had a couple universal joint replacements there but nothing major.
I just wish we could see that a little more often. That's just amazing to me.

In the older days, hmm before the 90s. Auto Manufactures will try to make their car to last *as long as possible* to build their company's image up.
Nowdays, they just want your car to last a bit longer than warranty period and thats about it. cuz time has change and *MOST* people consider any car with over 100K to be a *worthless piece of crap*, so why would the auto manufactures have to make their car super durable anymore? if every car nowdays still last 150+ miles without major work, it will be hard as hell to sell new cars. 5w20 rock on baby !
To OP's question : I want 200K outa my engine. but at around 60K miles Im going to bring it to a vendor here of my choice (gonna drive it down) to break my engine down to rebuild it. ceramic seals and stuff. then 10w40 winter & 20w50 for summer.

depends on the way you drive it, my dad readily got his cars to over 200k, that was a BMW, a few renaults and a chevy S-10... oh and a ford ranger, but that POS was so god awful in every other way I don't think it counts. They got around 90% freeway miles.
My saturn has 275k on it and is still running strong despite being an engine that is notorious for dying young in most cases. I know of one guy with at least 450k on his saturn. I also had a ford thunderbird that had only 120k miles on the clock and the ball joints were goners, I doubt the engine would have held up much longer either. I never got to find out because I wrecked that thing (thank god in hindsight)
I'd expect the rotary to last less time, but I'd expect at least 150k out of it, and I'd be satisfied with 200k.
I guess what it comes down to is how many heat cycles it goes thru. If you do short drives often, say if you're just running to the corner and back and barely giving the engine time to warm up; you're running it thru unnecesary heat cycles that are where the most wear and tear goes on, so a car that never gets road trips or long hauls is going to last far less time than one that gets driven a lot but over long periods of time.

Any engine that can't last 200k is a piece of crap in my opinion. Usually everything else on the car should start to break before the engine is done. But then I've been spoiled by my '93 Miata.

280k on the last prelude, and was still running hard, I remember when I did my first fluid changes after buying it at 230k it was all sludge.
Crossing my fingers for my 8 to last beyond 100k, by that time people would be swapping out the old renesis with the new improved one

A former Mazda insider over at Miata.net said their initial tests indicated the Renesis should be good for 200k. It would be nice to know what oil they were usung in these tests--my guess is it was not 5w20. Do you think they made a conscious decision to sacrifice engine life in favor of CAFE standards?
