What is this?

I don't have a pic and i have washed my car so much i can't believe i never saw it. In the back below the bumper in the fake mesh there is a little square. Pull it open and it looks almost like a water connection. Obviously not a mechanic and i am curious what its for?

It's for your towing eye I think.
Look in the manual it shows you there.

I believe those are the holes for the tie down bolts. My square has always been missing, and Mazda refuses to give me one.

Ahh, of course. That is exactly what it is. Wow, I would definitely raise hell about them replacing that. Very noticeable if the square is missing.

Yes, tie down bolt/hooks for the Ocean liner, and Mazdaspeed aftermarket tow hooks.

Try this link to Finishline performance. Appears you should have at least two tie down plugs depending on the year of your 8.

There is only one, on the right side, which seems to be an unlikely place (and number) for a tie down.

Look in the black toolbox in your trunk. The tie down hooks are in there. (Or at least they are on my RX-8)

Also the manual says something about this as well.. basically if you ever had the car flat-bedded, I've been told you need to show them to the driver or they could have problems properly securing the car (i.e. breaking something.)

On cars that sit lower to the ground, such as ours, it is a good idea to use these when putting the car on a flatbed, because they usually just strap a hook around some solid point under the car, not really caring what will happen, and start pulling. This would cause the steel cable to pull tight against the rear diffuser, causing damage.

I never noticed the one in the front though, thanks nemesis for pointing that one out.
