Question Went to buy an RX-8 today....

Used mazda rx8 , 2005, miles:58000
price on website: $11,900
saw carfax no major accidents

Went to see the car,
Body: some scratches, yellow stain on rotors, water in taillights!

Driving it: when I brake....wheel/tires starts rumbling , like landing a plane...

"performance" salesman told me that the flooding engine problem was gone in the 2005 rx8...wut.

Their final offer was : $11,800 that is with taxes+tags+ processing fees

I offer them $11,000 as the total price. They said no...so I left....

you want me to go back?

Rust on the rotors is not a problem; it comes off after your first bit of braking. Rust on the hub is different, however.

Water in the tail lights is something they should fix before selling the car, seriously. (assuming Mazda dealership, but looking @ cars in background seems not likely)

Flooding issues I believe were largely resolved in 2006 when the new starter was introduced and PCM flashes were figured out. Make sure this car is up on its recalls!

The shaky brakes are a bad sign.

I think if you press the appropriate issues, you might get them to reconsider your price point. Then again, I'm no haggler.

I personally would probably look elsewhere.

I would tend to shy away from buying a car from a dealership (or even a private seller unless you know their craftsmanship is good) that has a lot of user-added mods. You will inherit all of their screw-ups therein.

i wonder what the shaking brakes are being caused by ... also i think you can get a better deal ... and correct me if im wrong but i dont think the flooding issue has ever been completely fixed coz turning the car off cold wil flood any rotary ... right?? i bet the 06+ models have the upgrades to help reduce the chances of flooding but not fixed the issue as its part of the design

I don't think he was saying to stay away from auto trader as much as he was saying stay away from auto transmission.

did the steering wheel pulsate when you applied the brakes? Rotors are probably warped and need to be turned or replaced...it sounds as though this 8 did not make a good 1st impression, better deal awaits.

reasons for not getting an 04-05 automatic!!?!?!

also my brother was in the car at the time, and he said it might be "bumps" on tires, or really out of alignment

Go turn it on and off real quick and flood it. Then tell them they are full **** and liars.

But seriously you should be able to find a better deal out there unless your in a real rush.

The reasons for not getting the 04-05 automatic is that they take major hits on horsepower and torque compared to manual. The 06+ automatics have almost as much power as the manual.

hmm... the person who is selling you the car is full of ****. 05 model can still flood, 06+ have the better starter/battery to help flood less... but rotary can still flood no matter what year. and as for the braking... i had that happen to my parent's SUV. lol felt like car had stone wheels while braking. Apparently the front rotors were rusted and caused uneven wear. They had to be resurfaced and cleaned, and had to replace brake pads. My parents bought this SUV from a dealer not knowing it was salvaged... it was in a flood. i would stay away from flooded vechicles your gonna end up paying more money than the cars worth repairing it. use autocheck, they have more details and you can get the unlimited checks for 2 months.. + title guard. Always trust your gut instincts, and good luck purchasing your 8. I bought mine recently, if you need help with anything like financing or what to look for let me know, i spent 4 months researching before picking one out.

3 months ago i got mine from a divorced man a lil over 50yrs old, private seller in NJ. Got it for $13,750. Mint as mint could be. Showroom condition and always garaged (seen it). 2004 Rx8 VR. At the time 14,200 miles. Has all the flash stickers. Original owner and saved all the service receipts lol. Hell he even saved the original MSRP window sticker lol. Always used 5w-30 mineral oil. Redlined it once a week. Fully loaded with navi. Black on black leather. Appearance package, the works...

Checked carfax to be sure. It all checked out. No accidents or damage. The damn thing didnt have a scratch on it. I couldnt believe the condition of this 6 year old car.

He said i reminded him of his son, who he has been distant with.

got 1.5k off the price working with that. Anywayz, he is a really nice guy, and it goes to show there are still nice people like that in this world who arent around to **** people out of something any chance they get. So far i put 3k miles on it and gave it its first oil change since ive owned it.

She runs as good as the brand new 09 i test drove last year... Actually the one i have felt a bit faster.

As long as the car isnt off ebay, it doesnt matter where you find it, there will always be a good car, you just have to look hard enough and do your research.

EDIT: Yea, just finished reading about it being "automatic tranny" lol... Oops. Oh well, hope you enjoyed my lil story.

BTW, shaky brakes are 80% of the time warped rotors. Wait for a manual with a better deal and no problems.

Why should you not get a automatic 8 you ask???

First of all the RX-8 should of never even been produced with a Automatic transmisson, a true sports car should only come in a manual (RX-7 anyone??? and exclude the new damn Ferrari's with auto-clutch manuals, those aren't "sports cars") Mazda only made a auto tranny for the 8 because the RX-8 was kinda a compromise to begin with. Not a true sports car, a car that the general public could afford. General Public= not car enthusiast's...

basically you getting a automatic means you're not a car enthusiast... Sports cars should never of come with a automatic transmisson... but Mazda also didnt target car enthusiast's for this car either, which is why it has 4 seats and a Automatic transmisson available...

I guess it depends on the dealer. When I looked at an 07 rx8 with water in the taillights at a nissan dealership I asked if there was anything that could be done about it. they told me "anyone who wants a used car to look like a new car should be buying a new car" so I walked straight out of there. Some dealers just dont give a ****.

the real reason why no 04, 05 auto.

automatic 2004-2005 have a weaker engine, less gears (4 instead of 6) and only 1 oil cooler. (2 is barely enough for normal ones, what makes you think 1 is good for auto?)

the rotor i bet is warped, stay away from this car.

if you want an AT, get an AT. I hate that everyone just starts bitching up a storm because someone wants an AT.

I do agree with the get an 06+ statement if you want an AT.

Getting an AT doesn't mean this at all.. total bullshit

basically you getting a automatic means you're not a car enthusiast... Sports cars should never of come with a automatic transmisson... but Mazda also didnt target car enthusiast's for this car either, which is why it has 4 seats and a Automatic transmisson available...

I don't get either why they wouldn't fix the tail light. Sure people don't expect used to be new but some things you just need to fix if you want people to buy. the mitsubishi dealership I got my used 8 from was nice enough to get a whole new front bumper because the one on the car had a crack inside by the rotary thing. Why they want to lose out on sales is beyond me.

I have an 07 AT...hehe I love it and i wont have as much problems down the line (as far as stated below)...2 of my friends' 8s are both down...05 and an 06 manual. I plan on a pettit SC so ha!

Btw reason for AT was I got mine brand new at $23k and they had an 08 GT w/ everything $34k...and as an investment decided that an AT will last longer for me..had i gotten a Manual...i wouldve spent alot on tires (drifting) and prolly crashed (playing) haha

When is an auto not an auto? That depends on whether you're talking -mobile, -automatic, or -trader.
Also, flooding has always been a problem and you cannot protect a car from it. Ask any resident of New Orleans.

Too many double meanings in this thread.

the 04 and 05 are 4 speed autos, in 2006 and up they are 6 speed auto.

And yes dont buy a car someone elsse has already modded out especially if you dont know thenm at all. They could have abused the car and now want to pawn it off
