weird idle issue - any suggestions

I've done a search and found seveal threads, but Im not sure whats happening to me is the same thing.

My car (before the M flash last week) idled smooth (for and RX8 that is). It had the constant vibration with only a little inconsistancy in it. Since the M flash the idle is more concsistant in the vibration. Today, same consistancy but every now and then - no particualr pattern - I get this - well it sounds like a missed cylinder or something. Hard to explain. Its like its idleing along: murr - murr - murr - murr -murr - poof - murr - murr - etc. Its the "poof" part. The car shakes slightly when this happens, but barely so.

any suggestions.

slllygrl10, I'm not so sure your thing is the same as his.

It sounds almost like a faint backfire that happens every few seconds but at irregular intervals. Open your driver-side door and you'll hear it more clearly. Better yet, get out of your car and bend down at the tailpipes and listen. That has been happening to EVERYONE'S car since the RX8 came out. It has been determined to be a completely normal characteristic of the engine. That is if we're talking about the same thing.

Are you SURE it wasn't already there before the M flash? I'm not sure that heart murmur "poof" thing is associated with the vibration.

Mine idles the same way, periodic muffled backfire type sound, always has. . . The "M" flash significantly reduced the vibrations at idle though.

Mugatu, I am greatly offended by the negative tone and the inappropriateness of your question.

the idle you describe sounds normal. the new flash may have made it more pronunced, but it happens from time to time. aside from a higher idle, I don't think they can remove it completely from your car.

So which RPM is normal for idle.
I get a 7/8 of 1000rpm (when warmed up).
Is it ok?

it varies for me. When starting up cold, it idles at 2,000 rpm and slowly drops to about 1,000.

Once fully warmed up, mine will idle around 850 rpm, up to around 950 rpm.

Mine started doing the same thing right after the M flash. I took it back to the dealer. they called Mazda and they say it is the normal rotory idle I lhear, characteristic of the rotory engine. The M flash lowered the idle down to 8 or 700 rpm. If I gas it 1000- 1200 rpm the idle evens out. I don't notice it anymore.

So, um that would be a 700 to 800 rpm idle?

:D
