Which wears better? (stock) Leather or the cloth seats?

Or the Alcantera?

Everytime I see an RX-8 the cloth seats look kinda smooshed.. Is it me or do you get a better seat with the leather?

How have your leather/cloth seats held up? How big are you and how many miles do you have?

Do you feel the leather seat is a better seat?

Thanks

peter

I have the Alcantara, have had no wear..they are just as nice as when new and have 34K.

In any case wear has to do with maintenance.

I'd think that cloth would hold up longer, unless you spill something. Spills are much easier to clean off leather I'd think.

I have leather, the drivers seat was showing wear when I bought it in 2006, now at 70k it still looks the same, I maintain them with conditioner and I'm a pry big dude myself ( 6'5", 260lbs)

My leather seats have held up pretty well. I'm large and the car has about 34,000 miles. The leather is aftermarket, so I don't know how it compares to the OEM for wear. But since it sounds like you're trying to decide, this is one more option. In fact it was the best option for me because I was able to get the Sport package and add the Leather instead of higher packages which had stuff I didn't want.

I don't think the seats themselves are different. When I got the aftermarket leather they just removed the cloth and replaced with the leather.

Check here if you might be interested in getting aftermarket leather. Lots more color choices....

My cloth seats are holding up just fine...

...of course, I only have, like, 3,000 miles on my car!

This reminded me of something that I've been meaning to ask, though.

Does anyone have the neoprene seat covers that Mazda sells? They look kind of cool and they seem like they would take away any worries you might have about wearing out the seats.

IMO leather wears better, but the big advantage is if a tear or rip happens. Leather tears can be mended by a skilled interior upholstry dude, color matched. (every dealership has one or two mobile guys) I'd imagine a tear in fabric is much harder.

I love my cloth seats. 1 year and 10k miles old thus far, no issues rising up.

I was never a fan of leather seats, though. Just seem...uncomfortable to me.

I have the seat covers and they show no wear at all.
They also add a little more cushion, which doesn't hurt.

Comes down to maintenance. I've seen cracked leather seats as well as pristine condition ones too. Same with cloth seats.

My only thing about cloth is no matter how clean you keep it, eventually it is going to get a smell about it. Keeping it really clean and not letting it get wet will minimize that, though.

Do not buy leather seats, your back will get sweaty and the seatback will get slick, then you will slide out of your seat during a power drift, the car will leave the road and go up over the curb, then the insurance adjustor will ask a bunch of questions and give you a hard time during the phone interview

^What?

I prefer leather myself, but the RX-8 has nice seats no matter your flavour.

I have never moved an inch in my seat and I even autocross and spun out a few times, ok maybe many times.

I have leather in my 2004 and use a leather cleaner on a regular basis. Like new with no wear spots.

if you live in a really hot climate avoid the leather ones....

but recommended in a really cold climate due to the electric heating in the seats

go figure !!!

if you don't take care of the leather, it won't last and will need replacement after say 7-8 years... :-( :-( :-(

For centuries leather was used as armour. It will hold up WAY better than cloth.

But in a sports car, leather is too slippery.

And this may need to become my new signature quote
