Warped Rotors 18K
 

Just got back from dealer--pulsing brakes due to warped rotors, which are too far gone to machine. $650 for front brakes only...this is not a car that has been driven hard. Anyone received warranty assistance in a case like this? By the way, the dealer did a brake inspection at my request at 15,000 and found nothing.

The dealer told you that they are too far gone? Take em to a machine shop and get a second opinion. Much cheaper to get em turned than buy new rotors

Had mine machined by the dealer around 23k for free, they started pulsating again and asked them about it when I took it in a 26k for an oil change, this time they wanted $80 to turn them. I said no, when they get bad enough I will just get some better rotors on the web. I believe stock rotors from Mazda are around $150 a piece, there is better options on the web for cheaper.

From what I have heard and experienced once they are warped, machining just is a temp fix to it, they will act up again. I don't believe the factory rotors are of the highest quality.

drilled FTL, slotted or solid are much better for longevity, esp. if you are hard on the brakes.

I think Advance Auto parts or Checker will do it, just take the rotors off and have them check the thickness of the rotor. If they are so far gone that they won't even work after being turned, then I would contact MNAO for replacement. Brake rotors should last much longer than that, I have 24k miles of hard driving on mine, and no issues.

so is warped rotors the only explanation of the pulsing when i brake

A good set of crossed drilled and slotted rotors will hold up just fine for daily spirited driving.



Careful with ebay brands-- do your research

so i guess what i heard about drilled n slotted rotors isnt true i was told they dont last nearly as long and pads wear down faster

well the only wierd thing is that when i got my new motor like a 2 months ago mazda did that whole inspection and said they r fine so obviously they know nothing

donno how you guys drive, Ive never had wrapped rotors on my cars.

most likely, since rotors never/almost never warp. bed your pads properly and use pads that have a heat range condusive to your use and you wont have that problem

Try re-beding the brake pads, it could just be a small problems. Warped brakes is sort of a myth and even if its true its unlikely to happen from street driving.

Yep could be deposits.

fine means they are in tolerance. If they measured them, that means they could be .001 from the limit and they are still fine.

Especially when it comes to used cars. Everyting is fine.

They do warp if the lug nuts are not tightened evenly and in the right sequence. I've had that happen several times after state safety inspections. But they've usually come back after loosening and properly tightening the nuts.

it seems like its not all the time and idk how that makes any sense like it didnt do it today that i noticed and im just kinda doing some minor testing as far as hard braking and easing on the brake

well ive been watching my braking and it seems like they only make the pulsating when its hot outside because when i go to work at 4 am i have no problems but when i get off and its in the high 90's it does it idk if there is any explanation for that

For a daily driver it's hard to beat Hawk Ceramic pads

it is VERY unlikely that you have actual warped rotors.
Unless you're looking to spend thousands of dollars for a very track-oriented setup, sticking with the OEM brakes are by far your best option.
Bring in the TSB as recommended. The service people "should know better" and these guys sound like they're trying to dick you over, so you should ideally find another service place. Customers shouldnt have to haggle for the proper car under warranty.
