SOOO my little cousin is looking into buying a new car!

Well his parents..

they want to get him a nissan altima 09..

I would rather keep it in the mazda family...

I tihnk i got them to go for a mazda...

What type of mazda do you all think a 17 Year old Highschool kid should get???
Automatic or standard??????

his birthday is coming up on the 19th.. and they want to get it by then.. any suggestions would be helpful..

the choice is between a RX8, MPs 3, or the NEW mazda 6

What kind of car does he want?

And why force a Mazda on him and his family? Once you get away from unique vehicles like sports cars, brand isn't as important as the features and amenities of a particular vehicle.

That said...as the father of a daughter, I recommend that this kid get an RX-8 or possibly something with just two seats.

Remembering my own youth, get him something roomy with a good back seat. Back seat can be used for obvious purposes, and also to hold a lot of friends when they go out to joyride.

IMHO, buying a sports car or a powerful sport sedan for a teenager is ridiculous. Teenagers are the worst drivers on the road, and everyone knows it but them. I think the 3 would be a great choice.

I dunno the Altima coupe with the VQ35 is a lot better than the Mazda 6 IMO.

But I think in terms of fuel economy and practicality, getting the regular 3 with the 2.3L engine is good =)

Mazda6 A lot of bang for the buck and just right for a younger driver. Simply adding the spoiler option gives it enough flair for a high schooler. It's amazing what you an carry in a '6, especially with the fold down rear. My daughter's took her thru high school and now senior year of college.

Get a REGULAR 3 or 6. Feel free to add options but avoid the Speed models. Insurance is bad enough besides which most 17 year olds shouldn't be given too much HP.

His family is getting a car, not you.

Mazda is a good brand, but for 17 yr olds, HE WILL hit the car one way or the other, so just get him a beat up Civic.

Stop spoiling kids, 09 Altima ...

Lol funny thing is he sees all my dumb freinds with civics and he says "They cheap, I want a car that will drive not a car that will break something every couple miles (motor mount, axle ETC ETC)

hahaha which is true.. i have a buddy who has a Eh2 Hatch GSR swap.. and he breaks motor mounts faster than i go through tooth brushes

hit the car? like walk up and punch it? or run into/back into something? I got mine when I was 17... only thing that's happened to mine is someone opening their door into my car at a grocery store parking lot... but I wasn't 17 when that happened.

+1 for Mazda3 (non-Speed version)

1. Plenty fast for a 17 year old
2. 4 or 5 doors....he should have a social life and this makes it easier
3. Stylish...not another civic or corolla
4. Handles very well out of the box compared to the other cars in the econo-box class, and if he wants to Auto-X it is a great car to start with.

I'd go with the old 6. Sporty, enough space for a teenager, and now that there is a hot new model the old models should go for cheap! The new ones seem to be targeted at an older more family oriented crowd anyways.
Or the 3 is cool too.
