Very close calls - Post your story

Post your story about how your RX8 almost visited the big garage in the sky. There will be no hating in this thread, unless it's funny.

I was taking a corner at a high speed (entering it at probably 60 when rated for 25) but I had complete control.. It's one of my favorite feeder-road exits that really doesn't have any surprises or apparent dangers except for the possible idiot.. Hints the following.

This very large blond woman in a Lexus SUV was pulling into a parking lot via an entrance at the end of the curve I was pulling into. She pulls off the road diagonally to the right, stops. Then I suppose she realized she had made a mistake and started to whip around back into the lane in front of me without looking.. I'm about 25ft away.

There were no thoughts, no judgements, no "Oh ****!", just pure instinct swerving me just enough to miss the front of her SUV and hold control..

I saw in the rear view that she was bouncing back up from a slam-brake, and she just sat there half out in the road stunned and not moving..

My heart was beating the same as if I'd run the 400..

You're just lucky that you didn't kill yourself/her doing that. Taking a feeder road at more then twice the posted limit is just unsafe.

GJ on the fast reactions, but just take it slower next time.. I hate seeing 8's in accidents.

^^ Well, is there a chance we can keep it to stories that don't involve driving in an incredibly stupid manner such as you did, going twice the speed limit and where you admit the only danger is except for a possible idiot?

Sorry, but driving in such a way makes YOU the idiot.

OK, on to my story - it involves a deer, and DSC saving my *** yet again in a tight spot.

I'm trucking along in my RX-8 in western IL out on I-88, driving back from a weekend of seeing my mom. Sunday afternoon about 4:00 PM, mid-October last year. Sunlight is nice and golden ... I'm going 80 mph in a posted 70 mph zone and going with the speed of the flow of probably 70% of the traffic.

Out of the corner of my eye, i catch a movement out of the ditch, and up comes this deer - had to be a buck as it had a big rack of antlers on it, bounding straight out of the ditch and I'm headed straight at it. Without evasive action, I'm going to hit this bucker straight on and probably wind up with it in my lap. Of course, no time to think, my reactions kick in.

I stab the brake really hard and simultaneously jink the wheel right towards the shoulder - the deer just barely misses the left front corner of the car - as I did it, the DSC flashes and the brakes chatter. Of course now the car is headed straight into the ditch at 70 mph, so I give the brakes another hard poke and jink the car back onto the road - a little fishtail straightening and I'm back on the straight and narrow. I hit the cruise control and continue on. The DSC saved the day yet again!

The deer? Not so lucky. I watched in my rearview mirror as he managed to clear my side of the road - ran across the median and up onto the westbound side where he got nailed straight on by a westbound Peterbilt. Sayonara, Bambi!

Driving 60 on a 25 mph curve with a parking lot entrance at the end of the curve and a car in front of you.

Real smart and he say's he's in complete control. That's not a close call, that's driving like a MORON.

I was riding to work on a two lane highway, A herd of 10 deer run out about 75 ft. infront of me. I slammed on the brakes and slid right between 2 of them without hitting a thing. I had to pull over after that. They scared the absolute **** out of me.

^^^ bambi pretty sure the car that hit it would be totaled

all my close calls are dumb women suv drivers who think they are in a tank, and they start tailgaiting me, and I feel like i'll be under their car, naturally of course i give them the hello finger and WOT myself out of there and naturally I see them in the distance in my rear view

women suv drivers who think they are in a tank, and they start tailgaiting me,
Slight hijack... I handle tailgaters by braking a bit. Not brake check, just brake enough to wake them up. I find that women in SUVs usually get the message right away. Guys in SUVs tend not to, and guys in beat up old vans get mad.

No close calls in my 8 yet. I must not be driving it hard enough.

well um the reason my bumper is held together by splitter/ stabalizer bars is because I was driving down a two lane road in the rain... posted spead limit was 50 and thats about what I was doing give or take 1 or 2 mph. Its a pretty busy street with telephone poles along the sides of the road. I was approaching a gas station and some old bloke pulled out right infront of me (my headlights were on) with out any attempt to spead up to the flow of traffic. I did the only thing I could think of. I went for the right... slid off the road some how made it around a pole but still went through a big *** diamond shaped "construction ahead" sign and ended in a muddy *** ditch thing. Now the first thing that came to mind was to quickly get on the road and get the license plate of the car that pulled out but I was pretty damn stuck. Took some time but with turning DSC on and off the 8 handled off road mudding with ease (would not recommend though) only damage was to the bottom of the bumper. Thus the splitter bars. I think they look good btw. Adds alittle personality to my car.

...if you look close at my avatar you can see them at the bottom of the bumper

If you guys think I'm crazy, you should meet my stepdad. He and his silver 8 have managed to destroy a deer, a vulture, a turkey, and a barbed wire fence!

I nearly missed that electric power box that took out the power to an appartment complex and totaled my 2004 RX8. Stupid driving with the DSC turned off... just to see what it woud do! What a dumb ***. Oh well, that was a long time ago.

I don't care about street racing.. And I've read what everyone had to say about my experience, I just didn't feel like typing some sort of reply explaining what I'd do differently because I don't think anyone would really care..

Instead everyone feels the urge to one-up me by criticizing my driving habits. I don't do this **** all the time, I'm not some punkass kid with a new car causing trouble on the streets. I'm having fun with it, living a little. I cant afford a wreck/insurance hike so I never push it very close to the limit.

"just you post the same thing over and over.. "

I posted about the DSC issue, and this... That's not my idea of repeatedly posted nonsense. It's discussing the two most current events that I've had with my car, and hopefully brings a few new topics to put on the board...

ok,

so was the car warm or cold when you were diving like an ******* in the dsc thread?????

the answer will let us know if the car was at fault for making you more stupid than the norm.

I gotta agree with drunk IT guy. The rest of you bash him for letting his car out on slim occassions I mean isn't that a little hypocritical of some of you. You can't tell me some of you havn't let your 8 cut loose on some of the public roads and if you do your a liar. This car screams to be driven on the odd occassion. So because he had a close call and not at his fault might I add, he is an *** for having fun with his car. I suppose those of you that have pushed your 8's and not had a close call makes it all the more acceptable.

from my personal experience, I always handle tailgaters by, violently(just a bit) shaking my car from left to right(in my lane) like dodging bullets, and since the 8 does that very well, they always keep their distance, they probably think I'm drunk huh

well, I will agree that it was not ALL his fault, but had he not been speeding, it would not have been quite the close call that it was. I will say that there really isnt definitive proof if the car or driver is at fault in the dcs thread, but from what is shown, it could be the driver. Either way, even if these guys take it over board, they -usually- arent being asses just cause they can.

I've become the most boring driver. No close calls since '92 when I took a curve too fast on a wet road in my Miata and came within an inch of grazing the guardrail.
