V1? & Placement?

First off my girlfriend wants to buy me a V1 radar detector for christmas before I let her waste her money lol I want to know how good the V1 really is.

Any radar detector I've experienced in other peoples' cars are just good for making annoying beeps when your by stores. lol how good is the V1 really?

Secondly, where the hell to put it? I was thinking of custom fabbing the sunglass spot so I can get it in there and close it seems small but maybe it'll work. I like the clean look ( FYI I have a DIY on installing a Sirius Starmate in the ashtray spot ).

Has anyone done this? I've seen V1's on the sunvisor but thats not good enough for me.

... unless you have a Blinder Xtreme to jam the lidar.

I am going to get a V1.

It performs well and has the very nice patented feature of arrows showing where the radar is coming from and how many there are.

The automatic doors for the entrance to stores will trip the detector.

Alarms on buildings with proximity will also trip it.

Good practice is to let someone (a runner) drive ahead of you by a mile or so.

That way when they drive by the officer, if the gun is set to come on only when someone is approaching (POP mode), you get to see it bounce off that car before you get to the officer. By then you should have had plenty of time to slow down if you happen to be going a little over the limit.

I've had mine over 10 years; I had a Bel before that. I like the V1 a lot and it's saved my butt many times. (The one time it didn't was the one time I was too lazy to attach it.) Once you learn to interpret the "arrows" the unit is especially useful, as it can tell you—at a glance—which alarms you can ignore (i.e. to your right or left). And the "bogey counter" is good for detecting a trap where more than one cop car lurks ahead. Quality of the unit is quite good—not cheap or plastic-y. I also like how every few years you can send it in to be "updated"—for a fee—without having to buy a whole new unit. I mount mine on the windshield, right under the rear-view mirror.

On the other hand, the V1 is expensive (though seeing as I've had mine over 10 years now, maybe not). And I haven't checked out other brands, which might by now be technologically superior. But the V1 does the job, so I'm happy.

i have Escort Passport 8500 X50, works very well. The V1 is supposed to be better than the 8500, but it if I were to get a new radar detector I would get the new Escort 9500i, its $100 more than the V1, but you can program it so it detects the frequent false alarm spots and doesn't sound, but sounds if there's a new signal there, it also has gps and tells warns you about places cops frequent

This is how I had my V1 mounted before I sold it:

Basically, I bought a regular RJ11 cable (Standard phone cable) and routed through the A Piller down through the center console and out into the cigarette lighter underneath our arm rest

My GF has her V1 mounted on the windshield of her MS3. I have the Escort X50, when we ride together both radar seem to go off at the same time. I think the V1 with the arrows is a step ahead the others. I thinks is the superior unit for the price, no gimmics just business

LOL! Sorry about the pic size... It was big for detail purposes when I was trying to sell the radar. Those pics were actually in my for sale thread a long time ago

I love my V1 haven't gotten a ticket since I got it.

Its best to mount them on the windshield like in these pictures. If you want to stuff it away in the sunglass holder its just going to lessen the functionality.

You can run the leads from the kit to the sunroof and power the V1 quite nicely.

Ever Hernandez that is exactly how I will mount my V1.

It is recommended to mount it high, even with the roof if possible.

Yeah, the kit comes with all the necessary hardware, really easy to do.

^I thought about mounting it this way, but found it obstrusive in the twisties. It's doesn't allow a good range of vision during tight cornering.

When I got into Alcimedes car with it mounted above the mirror on the passenger's side I didn't even notice it there until it alerted us of an officer checking our speed. .... Very nice.

From outside the car it is hard to see.

I don't want an officer to easily see it because that normally means there will be no mercy because they aren't fans of detectors...

Tight cornering??? You mean at Indy??? In New York, detectors are legal and this to me is the best location, cant miss it, can hear it and easy to mute with easy install and no messing with wires...
