Update: I DO fit!!

For those of tall torso considering the RX-8 who've tried to fit in a touring or GT RX-8 and have failed... I do fit in a Sport!!

I got to sit in and, amazingly, test drive a RX-8 with sport package today. I 'll be be brief with my impressions as enough people have given theirs it's unlikely mine will sway you one way or another.

I did notice the air conditioning cycling on my test drive, but IMHO it wasn't obnoxious, nor was the slight amount of shifter vibration.

The car did display a fair amount of body roll as compared to my current vehicle, but not an amount I'd characterize as excessive or even surprising. Steering feel was good as well, though I was surprised at the number of turns of the wheel it took to make a U-turn.

All in all, the car was tossable, handled well and was plain fun. I'm still not sure if I'm sold but it was very hard to walk out without signing a sales contract...

its weird how people can fit so diffrently,im 6.2 at 210lbs and finaly got to sit in a gt model today(mines a week out)i was in the car only about 10 seconds and had the seat adjusted perfectly for me and even with my ball cap on had atleast 1 inch extra room.i just dont see how anyone 6.2 or even 6.3 could have a problem with this in a gt car.the shifter is perfect as is steering wheel.i even had to slide the seat just a little forward from full back to be perfect.my inseam size on 501 jeans is 36 and i fit perfectly.anyway for you tall guys out there, dont worry(like i did) entill you try one on for your self, you might not have to settle for a sport model if you really want leather.by the way i did not have to recline the seat back very far and i left the seat bottom in about the middle position, could have gained more clearence(enough for a helmet)by reclining a little more and going to full bottom with the seat.:D

Told ya so. :D There's a bunch more range of adjustability in the manual seat, in addition to the extra headroom from the lack of sunroof. Glad you're not out of the race yet.

Billk -- promising post!

This should help others that have been questioning their ability to fit in the different versions.

Now, go get your RX-8 already

>>> i just dont see how anyone 6.2 or even 6.3 could have a problem with this in a gt car

I'm 6' 0" with a 30" inseam and just barely fit (headroom-wise) in my GT with the seat all the way down. As you can guess, the seat is really not that far back. What's interesting is that my 6' 4" father has the same amount of headroom but is fairly scrunched leg-wise.

It really does depends on a persons proportions...

Thumbs up

Just to add another data point, I'm 6'2" with a 34" inseam, and I fit in the GT I sat in last night just fine, although my (rather tall) hair did brush the headliner on the left-hand side. The Sport I sat in left absolutely lots of headroom.

Thats good news to hear. I am 6'2" with a 32" inseam. Short legs and a long torso so my head can hit the roofs of alot of cars. But it sounds as if I wouldn't have much trouble with a 8.

Now I just gota get the job I am applying for and I am set.

I'd just make sure you sit in one doc.... I'm 6'-0" with a 32" inseam and my hair brushes the roof of my GT almost everytime I get in or out. It doesn't bother me, because it's only hair and I don't grease the stuff up - so the headliner doesn't have anything to worry about either. On the downside, if I hit a good size bump at speed, BLAMMO, right into the ceiling. Very pleasant....

I don't know if this helps anyone, but me (6'3" 200lbs) and my friend (6'5" 300lbs) fit in a RX-8 sport. We fit in the RX-8 even better then we do in his Firebird.

Until today, my only reason for not buying the 8 was headroom. I'm 6'2" and had to turn my head at an angle to fit in the GT -- unless I reclined the seat too far back. What a disappointment. Finally got to sit in a Sport today and now I own it. Headroom is great. Car is awesome.

I sat in the sport and didn't have much headroom, and the wheel was in a horrible spot for me. Though I drive a little more forward than most people do. Based on the way I felt there was no way I could own the car or even want my girlfriend to get it. At that time the dealer told me the seats were not height adjustable so who knows how they were set at the time. I'm supposed to go back next week for a test drive so I'll give an update then.

By the way I'm 6'2" with a 33" inseam

I'm 6'4" and I didn't fit well in the GT either. I was going to go for the sport, but then tried out a Touring and fit much better in there then in the GT. The cloth seats give more head room, so I don't have to go without the sunroof :D.

Talking Heh... so far I win :)

...as far as height goes. I'm 6'6", 36 inseam. And - guess what - I don't fit in the RX-8 with a GT or touring package, obviously due to the sunroof. However, I have a strong feeling that I will fit in the Sport package-equipped car just fine. It's always the same story with coupes for me. I'm currently driving a '94 Probe GT (first owner), and couldn't get a sunroof because my head was rubbing on the headliner, but I fit just fine with no sunroof. Same with the Infiniti G35C.

So I'll get the sport package with cloth seats - but then I will get the leather retrofitted, so if the cloth seat gives more headroom, that won't apply. Still, I think it will be OK.

Funny thing is that so far I was unsuccessful in locating an RX-8 in the area where I live that's not fully loaded, so I have to hunt one down with no sunroof.

eccles mentioned that the manual seat gives more adjustability than the power one. How's that possible? What exactly can be adjusted with the manual seat? And does it have any sort of lumbar adjustment?

The manual seat has less individual adjustments - a single height adjustment vs individual front and rear height adjusters, and no lumbar adjustment - but it has a greater range of height adjustment, probably due to the fact that it can go lower because it doesn't have the electric gubbins underneath it.
