Unstuck stuck sliding console lid

Did a search on this and was surprised to see that it doesn't look like anyone else has reported this problem.

Usually have a water bottle in the front cup holder but this weekend I cleaned out the interior and put things away. Put a couple of things in the compartment behind the cup holders and slid the lid shut.

Tried to open the compartment to take out my phone and found that the lid wouldn't slide far enough back to the pivot position. Tried poking a pen through the cutout for the charger wire but whatever was in there wasn't budging.

I examined the mechanism more carefully. The slide is actually a boss on either side of the lid near the front that rides in a channel on either side of the cup holder compartment. When the lid slides back far enough, there is a relief on the channel on the driver's side that allows the boss to be free of the track and the lid can pivot open.

Remembering that I had one time nocked the lid off the track accidentally. I slid the lid forward almost to the front latch and gently nudged it sideways to the passenger side. Sure enough, I freed the boss from the left track and was able to pivot the lid up enough to remove the jam. Turns out that my phone was on top of some other stuff and the antenna was angled up enough to catch the lid before it could reach the rearmost position.

I had visions of dismantling the console but all is fine. Didn't even need a tool.

I've had the same problem, Infact I had to take it to the dealer to replace a broken piece on the latch. In hindsight, I wish I had left it broken so I can pivot open the damn thing when my SUNPASS gets stuck in the console

My console actually gets stuck in the slid back position. Once the top part came off completely. It always goes back to normal after a little maneuvering. Seems flimsy to me. It is a little annoying. I guess really annoying if you have to spend time at the dealership bc of it. Oh well. I guess our 8's can't be completely perfect!

I had a GMRS radio perched in the area above the cup holders. The heavy battery end dropped down into the rear cup holder at some point while I had the console completely closed. The position of the radio was such that the antenna was keeping the lid from sliding back more than about an inch and a half. After three or four minutes of fishing around under the lid I managed to get the radio horizontal again and slide the cover back.

Don't stack too many CDs in the cupholder - that's how mine locked up. The cover slid closed with no problem, but the top CD blocked it from opening again.

One more thing, this is VERY IMPORTANT...

DO NOT I repeat, DO NOT place a coffe mug in the cup holder without a lid!! Escecially if you like to get the revvs up on your way to the office!!

haha....not more than 10 minutes after geting my 8 the other day i had my wallet, cell phone and sunglasses on the console. i drive with it closed so i can rest my arm there while shifting.

tried to open it to get my phone and it wouldnt open! i was cursing the dealer for a faulty car...but i noticed it was my cell phone wedged up under it. had to do some jiggling, but got it open.

NOTE TO SELF: dont over fill console!

Good to hear I'm not alone - while I love the cool concept of the slide and flip mechanism after having one too many CDs in the console and having to go to the dealer I've learned my lesson. Also now I notice the little button is a bit askew. I'm guessing the next version will be a little heartier.

same happened to me. Some friend was playing wit mine and it got stuck when i was on the highway. I just did the stupid thing of just forcing it out. THen it started to make this weird sound when it slided. But i found out this part was missing and it was in the cup holder. So i took it apart and put it back. Luckily i didnt break anything.
