Any news on a twin clutch tranny for the RX8 in the future?

Twin plate clutch or dual clutch transmission?

We don't need the first (short of a 20B), but the second would kick ***.

Contrary to what some people say, they are absolutely for people who can drive. Nothing wrong with an automatically-shifted manual transmission. A proper DCT would help me put a better beat-down on M3s and Z cars at the track.

That said, don't ever expect to see one for the RX-8. At least not from Mazda. There are already aftermarket DCTs that can be fitted, but it's all custom work and very, very, very, very, very expensive...

That's right. Real drivers (like Jim Hall and Hap Sharp) used a Powerglide. Torque converter plus two speed planetary. No dual clutch stuff.

Back to the original question. Since the RX-8 is nearing the end of production, it's not likely they'll make any significant changes. They're even cutting down on the number of paint colors. Wait for the RX-9 or 10.

The twin clutch DSG transmissions in the VW GTI accomplish up shifts in milliseconds so they actually accelerate quicker than the manual versions...
But I still love shifting for myself... damn... I love my 8

Everybody knows a Dual Clutch tranny can shift faster.

Its designed for lazy people, just like the original Auto Tranny concept.

Porsche PDK begs to differ.

Then again, I prefer old school manual. SayNoToAutomatedManuals.

And what good would a short shifter be I ask you???

heal-n-toe downshifts done by computer?

I'm a participant not a spectator!

For those that have posted positive and relevant comments, thank you. For those that have not, your comments are very much appreciated and continue to add value to the conversation (no sarcasm of course). The inquiry is not about which one is preferred as I have already owned a twin (dual) clutch transmission and several manual transmissions.

However I'm considering an additional vehicle to my 996. But it would be nice to have the ease of the DCT, plus my wife could drive it when the VW is in for service or just for fun.

It will likely be in the cards at some point for Mazda as other manufactures have gone that direction. It's only a matter of time, hence my question about hearing anything about it.

YEAH! I'm tearing those damn synchronizers out of my transmission ASAP!
All you lazy bastards don't know how to double de-clutch? Hell with ya!
I want to feel the teeth crashing -- I'm a participant!

And don't even get me started on electric starters! *******!

The only thing I've heard from Mazda is the MAZDA3 will eventually get a DCT. Interesting if one finds it's way into the MAZDASPEED3, but I have doubts.

They are also working on six- and seven-speed automatics with "extended lockup range" that are supposed to have a "more direct feel" than a DCT.

Twin clutch transmission are designed to mate the efficiency of a manual with the shifting capability of an automatic. Twin clutch transmissions are capable of shifting much faster than a manual shifter can.

I still prefer to row gears but let's not kid ourselves.

I have a DSG in my TDi. It's neat, and it shifts quick but I still don't think it's better than a manual and even though it automatically downshifts ( and even blips the throttle if you force a downshift at speed to rev match ) as you stop, i'd much rather it shift to neutral as it drives me crazy.
