Tune up help!
My car has been running misfiring for a little while now (2 months) after I got a new engine installed. I finally decided to take it to the shop and they ran a compression test again. They said the engine was fine but I needed a tune up. They said $1041 for just a tune up!!!! I asked how much labor would cost they said around 150 so I'm just going to buy my own parts. Can someone recommend me a good tune up set or individual parts? (Coils, Plugs, Wires) Thanks in advance
I too have been looking at tune up packages. I dont know if I would trust parts from ebay, they are known for selling knockoffs as the real thing. I would check out the vendor section here on this site, check out mazmart and mazdatrix in particular. I believe both offer packages that include plugs, coils, and wires. Keep in mind the stock coils and wires last about 30K miles, while the BHR ones should last a lifetime, and improve performance. The BHR costs $580 for all three. I think the mazmart package runs about $400 (which includes all OEM parts). As mentioned I am looking to do a tune up soon as well, and the BHR seems to make sense since I wont need to replace by coils or plugs ever again.

I recently installed the BHR ignition and new plugs, and its incredible. You 'll find a lot of info about the mod and ignition health is one of the most important things for your 8. Its worth it in the long run, more reliable and I gained almost an extra 5 mpg on average. I have saved around 200$ just in gas over the past 3000 miles. Easy install and never have to worry about the coils for a while, its a win for me.
I bought a tune-up kit on eBay for $245 that includes a genuine Mazda coils, NGK plugs and wires. I paid $80 in labor cost to get it installed at a local rotary shop (Rotary Evolution). So, everything i paid is just $325 total. The car is running better than before and i redline the car once a day to take the carbon build-up away...

I bought the BHR midpipe, couldn't afford both, so I went with OEM ignition. Advance Auto lifetime warranty coils, 4 for $125, 4 NGK laser iridium plugs for$86, and NGK wires for $33.
Car runs great.
Btw, misfires kill cats pretty quick.

It's up to you to decide, i had mine installed January of this year, and the car is still running good, did i mention its running better than before...

Anyway, if you want to upgrade, then just get BHR...
IMHO BHR and if you cant you need to consider if this is really the car for you.
Maintainance will get a bit costly and going the cheapest route today is gonna cost you far more tomorrow, or next week, "etc."

IMHO, if one chooses to use OEM ignition parts, this in no way reflects on the suitability of this car for any individual owner.

I replaced my converter, did my tuneup, and other assorted maintenance tasks.
A modicum of mechanical aptitude, a willingness to learn, and a small investment for the necessary tools is all that's required.

I got the BHR coils and plugs. Pricey but still cheaper than parts at the dealer. I hope I can feel a difference for the investment. But does misfiring really ruin the cat that quickly? I may invest in a used midpipe if that's the case
If you're at 30,000 miles I bet you will feel a difference, be if from the upgraded coils or from just changing the plugs I don't know. But I know that I felt a (unexpected) difference when I did the BHR kit at 25,000 on my car. The engine felt far more willing to gain and lose rev's.
As to how many misfires kills a cat - I don't know for sure. I believe once reading that a certain number of misfires is acceptable to the ECU on the RX8? What I do know is that in my previous car (a 2000 miata) coil pack failures (which were common) and the subsequent misfires killed the cat within a few miles if you continued to drive on it.
Depending on the age of your car your cat may be replaced under warrenty - but the only way to extend the life of the cat is to take it off the car. Our cats get HOT! Over 1600 F while just steady 65 mph cruising - and the "danger zone" for damage starts around 1750 F. I frequently see temps above 1750 F if I do any "spirited" driving/runs through 1st, 2nd, and 3rd.
Personally, I'd love to be able to ditch my cat for a nice midpipe, but then I wouldn't be able to pass emissions testing.

I'm guessing that since you don't have a CEL from the post-cat O2 sensor reading out of spec your misfires were less severe than those caused by a completely failed coil (as in the case of the miata's).
I did initially have a CEL within 50 miles on the new engine but it was "fixed" and didn't return
I am very new to this form I have a question my rx8 is misfiring not all the time for the most part the higher the rpm's the more it brakes up I've changed the MAF sensor I will admit I don't know to much about the rx8 motor
