The interior picture looks like that. If you look at the picture of the car from outside, it looks like he hit it pretty much dead center straight on.

If you were going 60 mph head on into a tree, it is quite easy for the dash and floorboard to come in that far. Also remember that the tree probably didn't give an inch and is still standing there. Lucky to be alive at all.

There was a Ford Explorer that was on display at a local volunteer fire department for several months here. It was very hard to tell what happened because of the mangled mess. Two teenage boys were out driving recklessly. They had been drinking illegally and driving. At around 80 mph the driver lost control and drove off the street. He went head on dead center with a telephone pole. The display still had the pole in place where it ended up. It was back where the radio originally was in location just vertically. The dash hit both of the front seats. The floorboard was also touching the bottom of the steering wheel. The telephone pole snapped from the impact. The Explorer still had enough velocity that it was sent up sideways onto the driver's side. It had also rotated 90 degrees to the right so the top of the vehicle was now the most forward moving part. The top of the vehicle hit a tree right where both passengers heads were located. The velocity of the vehicle was still so great that the front and back of the vehicle literally folded around the tree. The roof went throught both occupants and stopped a couple inches short of the floorboard! The front and rear bumpers were almost touching each other around the tree. The pictures were just gruesome. It was hard to even tell it had been an SUV. When they had it on display, it had been unfolded from around the tree so it was actually in better condition than when they found it. You could also see where they had to cut the vehicle apart to get the occupants body parts out. There was still blood in the display and even one of their shoes and socks. Nothing from inside the vehicle was removed. They did this to preserve the mental effect of seeing it. It was the most horrid thing I have ever seen. The RX-8 didn't do too bad against a tree at that speed. The most impotant part is that both passengers lived. That's all that matters!

 

As bad as that car looks (cringe), and regardless of how it happened, it is indeed a miracle that you're still here with us. Sorry about the injuries that you sustained, but I'm damn glad it wasn't worse.

See? Isn't it a good thing you had back seats? That's where your guardian angel must have been riding....

Thanks for all the input. Its still hard for me to look at those pictures. I am indeed a very lucky guy. My accident was assigned to the homicide department. Guess they thought I died.

I think the rx8 held up rather well considering I hit a huge tree head on at nearly 70mph. I still dont know how I made it outa there with only a broken leg and missing tooth.

Glad to hear that you weren't more injured. I hope you learned two things:
1) don't be a dumbass-wear a seatbelt.
2) don't drive beyond situational limits.

 

It wasn't you who died -- it was your RX-8. It gave its life for you.

I'm more and more impressed with how safe the RX-8 is. Between your accident and mine, we're living proof of the car's front-impact and rear-impact crash-worthiness. Yours is a bit more dramatic than mine, though. :o

I suppose it's only a matter of time before somebody wraps their 8 around a tree broadside so we can see how those side airbags and freestyle doors hold up to impact.

I'll bet there are people out there who would be interested in buying the parts from the back end of your car. I could've used 'em myself, actually! In fact, I'll take your spoiler if no one else has spoken up yet.

 

That wasn't luck - it was common sense on his part. You'd still have some injuries, but they would have been much less severe had you been wearing your belt.

Not to be too harsh, but you're using up your nine lives pretty fast - perhaps you should try some of that common sense yourself. Driving drunk/doped, no seatbelt, etc. - perhaps you'll realize this time that you're not really immortal? Plan and act accordingly!

I am glad you are ok, but what would you have done if you had hit another car or person fatally or if you had killed your friend?

Slow down, and after reading your other post I hope you were not drinking...

Dude, someone is trying to tell you something; so listen-up and stop screwing around...

 

I learned my lesson about drinking and driving the night I messed up my front air dam. I was sober during this accident. I came around the corner a little too fast and the car slid ever so slightly causing my tire to hit the curve. This yanked my wheel to the left and there was a tree about 3 feet away.

 

Also glad the injuries are not too serious. I can't believe no one's asked about DSC. Was it on or off?

 

i say you buy a chainsaw and challenge the tree once again......

 

Glad you're OK, hope you learn not to drive like an idiot and test the car's cornering ability in a safer place than a road with trees and curbs.
