Transmission Leak

I just got my 2004 RX-8 about 3 month ago. Its a MT, and has 28K miles. Now I've noticed some leaking near the transmission. Figured I would just change the Tranny fluid while I took a look at it. Looks like it is leaking around a sensor on the transmission. Does anyone know what this sensor is? Is it Neutral Switch Sensor, Back Up Light Sensor, Transmission Fluid Temp sensor? The sensor is screwed in on the passanger side of the transmission, I will try to take pictures of it this weekend.

Has anyone else had this problem?

I would just take it to the dealer and have them fix it. The car has a warranty, and if you want to put in a redline or royal purple just have the dealer do it.

Neutral switch on the drivers side, backup light switch on the passenger side. Have the dealer replace or repair like Tig says.

Is this a common problem? Have you heard of anyone having a leak out of the backup light switch in the transmission? This seems unusual as my car only has 28K miles.

It's a used car. You have no idea where its been. Maybe the original owner was obsessive compulsive and repeatedly tightened and loosened the switch.

Just bring it in and don't worry.

The backup light switch is close to the exhaust and is subject to inspection during the 3305G Thermal Damage recall. Check to see if this recall has been carried out.

You asked if this has been reported as a common problem.

No it has not.
