Towing with an RX-8????

Has anyone put a hitch on an 8 and tried to tow with it??

Just wondering what you towed (how much it weighed) and how you did?

I am looking to pull just under 1000 pounds and wondering if this car will do it?? (It is a JetSki, so it would have to pull it up the ramp as well.)

Thanks for any input..

Why the hell would you even think of towing with a "sports car"

Tow hooks tie down and assist pulling onto a tow truck.

Not pull jet ski's.

Why would I tow with it??? If I have something I need pulled a few miles 8 times a year should I go buy a truck?

Right now I tow with a luxury car (Acura RL) and people think that is a bad idea but it works great.

Just don't feel like driving a truck for the occassional use.

Thanks for you open minds...

You do know the rx-8 has a lower torque and smaller engine then the Acura right?

Right now I am considering a G-35 Coupe, a Mustang Cobra and an RX-8. I like the way the RX-8 drives the best, but am concerned about pulling that little trailer. The other two cars will pull it fine. (assuming I can find hitches for them)

If the 8 will do it, I'd rather go that route..

3.5 v-6 vs. 4.6 v-8 vs. 1.3 rotary

I think you know the answer to your question.

Hmm... You guy smake it out like this is a no brainer. Let's try not to compare it to the RL -- sorry I mnetioned those other cars, but rather keep this to the topic at hand...

I would not think it would be that bad. We are talking about a trailer that weighs less than 1000 pounds. (Which is less that a car load of men with a trunk load of gear).

No way though huh?
I am sure it would be fine on level ground.. The only question would be how difficult it may be to pull it up the ramp..

Cool Good Luck....

Good luck finding a hitch, you would have to carve up the back bumper, and then there is nothing under there but muffler.

8_is_enuf,

If I can ever find a hitch I'm planning on doing occassional light towing with my RX-8. I have a small sailboat that I need to move from time to time. If my Celica GT-S (has less Hp & torque than a RX-8) could tow it without any problems then my RX-8 should be able to do it too.

I'm sure you could tow something, but I would be concerned about torque for towing. Not a whole lot of oomph in the '8 for that kind of thing. I looked around for towing capacity for the '8, but couldn't find it listed anywhere. I remember seeing a Geo Storm towing a Jet Ski once though, so I'm guessing you could probably get away with something similar. Good luck.

That's the problem. You need some torque to do that. The RX-8 doesn't have enough torque.

Besides, as others have said you'd probably have to make a mess of the bumper to install a tow hitch.

My old PT Cruiser had only 162 lbft of torque and 150 HP and it was rated to pull 1000 pounds.

If you look in the RX8 manual under the heading TOWING. It says that you should not tow anything with the RX8.

Yep. that's exactly what I was going to add to the thread. I had wondered about getting a small 600 pound trailer for previous vehicles. So I looked it up in the RX-8 manual. It said seomthing like "Towing - Do not tow with this vehicle" Not even class I (i.e. < 1000 pounds).

So I would say you will probably void your warentee just by putting on a hitch.

Keep in mind that depending on the places you put the ski in, you are most likely going to practically have a trunk full of water to unload and load. There's a guy that we ski with occasionally that has a large volvo sedan, and every time he uses the ramp, his back bumper ends up under water. For what repairs might cost you, buy a beater truck to take to the lake.

I'd be curious to hear what it says in the UK manuals, seeing that a trailer hitch is a factory option there.
