Totalled RX-8 (need sage-like advice)

I posted roughly under a month ago detailing the every detail of the nasty wreck I got into, and recieved alot of positive feedback as far as driving instruction etc.

When I last posted the car was estimated at $20k worth of damage, and they were going to REPAIR it. I went up to the bodyshop to tell them to go ahead and tear the car down shortly thereafter, knowing full well they would find quite a bit of damage once they began to peel it away. From the point of tear down, to the second claims adjustor arriving has taken over 2 weeks.

I got the call today saying they were totalling the vehicle out for (drumroll please)... $28,000

Of course mine was $35,000 when I got it. (even got silly and got Nav)

Is this considered a "fair shake" as far as my loss on this vehicle is concerned or am I getting hosed hear? I expected to take a loss, but $7k?

Thanks again,
Max

Max, sorry about the loss. Did you pay over list and add a lot of dealer options? The insurance company probably won't take into account any "additional dealer profit" but should include dealer options if you have the receipts.

That is a lot of damage. I wouldn't be surprised if the frame is out of whack. Unless they now how to straighten that out. I'd suggest to write it off instead.

They are writing it off - the $28K is the payout.

Max, I take it your insurance policy didn't include gap coverage (on a new vehicle (less than 1 year old), gap insurance covers the difference in value between the actual value and replacement value, allowing you to buy an equivalent new car). The only argument would be to find out what it costs to buy a used RX-8, similar model, similar mileage, to argue for a higher payout. Also, ask what the salvage cost might be, and see if it would be worth your while to buy back the wreck and sell off the good parts to make a bit of profit. A good engine, transmission, differential, etc. would be worth several thousand dollars.

Regards,
Gordon

Dont think I'm going to be able to salvage much off the engine, the battery exploded whenever the accident happen, showering everything in their with acid. On top of that their wasn't much left anyways.

Is their any value in the backend? (From dash to bumper)

Thanks,
Max

can you even sell the car for pieces? The wheels, seats, interior stuff, accent packages, aero package, the Moonroof mechanism maybe would be good for someone that didn't get that package. etc etc..

Maybe possible to pull about 2k in part sales alone.

I will have the salvage total before tonight, then I will know if it's worth it or not. Don't forget this is a GT so it's got the bose 6 disc, navigation, leather seats as well that I could sell...

If the engine isn't salvageable, I'll buy the rotors out of the engine. I've been looking for real rotors for display purposes, but I keep getting outbidded at ebay So, if you decide to try selling parts, keep me in mind for the engine housing, and I'll at least get you a little bit of money back. Sorry about your wreck, glad you're ok.

Give Prestige Auto Brokers in Grand Prairie a call. They buy lots of hi-line totaled cars.

I really question the loss of value. I don't see any used RX-8's for comparrison and since I don't expect the car to loose value the way a Geo Metro would, I think I would be fighting it. You can push the claims adjusters a bit even though they act like you can't and $7k is a lot of money. Also I would like to note that there is an insurance commissioner in your area and they can help you too if you feel that you're not getting a fair shake.

Prices have come down a bit.
I know I got My GT with Nav last October for 31K. I did not have the body kit or the 6 CD, but it had the Bose Stereo Leather etc etc..

I think you caould get a much better deal now than 35K, you might be out only about 3K.

Sorry to hear about your loss. You should try to sell salvagable parts to make up the difference.

So, on that note it looks like you have a spoiler and ,if so, I am interested in buying it(as long as it's in great condition)..:D

Max, 7k is a bit much. Make sure you pull your aftermarket stereo from the back as they should have no claim to that. Furthermore, a car like this does not depreciate down 7k from driving off the lot unless you paid over invoice. If that's the case, then you might be SOL. See what the salvage total is and see if you can recover anything out of it. I'm sure you can. I bet the exhaust and rear end are in great shape, plus the rear panels and trunk/spoiler etc.

Let me know how it works out.

Actually, I'd love to take one of those rims off there as I have a little curb rash on one of mine. Dont forget to pull your strakes too if they're in decent shape!

My bad, I misunderstood.

I know a few people would be interested in the nav system. I know I am.

Before TT&L I paid 33k for EVERY option possible, back in April.

I will call Auto Prestige in GP to see how much they'll give me for it once I know the salvage amount. If its no good and the salvage is cheap I will take note of everyone that wanted pieces in this thread.

I'll be more updated after the claims guy calls me back tonight.

28k isn't that bad a deal.

6MT + GT + Navi is 30,000.

I lost close to 2,000 on a 10,000 car (my first car) when it was totaled due to a guy in a truck running into me at full speed while I was at a stop light. That's a 20% loss. I only had the car for 28 days. Never even washed it. Your loss looks significantly less than that.

On the bright side, you're only about 3 grand off from where you started, and can get a new car out of it.

I know it's of little consolation to you, but it's better to look on the bright side of things than dwell on the dark side.
