bent frame, damaged beyond repair, or it would be easier to just buy a new car.

totaled is the condition where; value of the car-cost of repair<0

that is if your car is valued at $22k before the accident and it costs $23k to repair, your car is totaled.

A good rule is if your car looks totaled it most likely is. Though your car can be totaled and not look it.

Check with your insurance company, they can tell you. For mine (Progressive) they will total the car if the car can not be repaired OR if the cost of repairs is more than 75% of the current market value

Also if its close to being to the point of totaled, you can usualy work with the insurance to total it out.

I had a friend whos car was worth 18k, he was t-boned and the cost of repairs was 12k, they wanted to fix it, he knew the car would never be the same, since it rarely is after a major crash. Also cause of the age of his car 2yrs 25k miles at the time, they were going to use aftermarket and rebuilt parts....he was able to work with them and get a check for 16k that paid off his lean on the car, and also left him with enough cash to put a downpayment on a new one, and have the same monthly payment.

KYLiquid is correct on the 75%.

My car was originally estimated at $12,000 (approx) damage. In the end it was over$30K. They didn't total it until it was almost completed then they just gave up on it and paid me off. I had the adjuster from hell and I couldn't get him to accept the 75% damage number from the very beginning.

The main thing is that I didn't here you say anything about being injured. I hope that is true.
